Surprisingly good on all levels.

While the story was mostly predictable, I still loved every moment of it, and couldn’t stop thinking about the characters.
The performance was excellent as are all of Emily’s.

Historia
As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

Sweet and filled with love and hope

The characters were wonderful. The narration was too. It was an endearing story of found family, and learning to open your heart even when it’s scary.

Historia
Escaping intergalactic kidnappers has never been quite so ridiculous. When Lem and her faithful dog, Spock, retreat from the city for a few days of hiking in Algonquin Park, the last thing they expect is to be kidnapped by aliens. No, scratch that. The last thing they expect is to be kidnapped by a bunch of strangely adorable intergalactic bounty hunters aboard a ship called the Teapot. After Lem falls in with an unlikely group of allies, the gang must devise a cunning plan to escape their captors and make it back home safely.

A mostly-chill adventure with unexpected friends.

A nice bit of positivity and fun with entertaining new characters. The insertion of ridiculous technobabble and names from famous sci-fi media was a nice, humorous touch I would not have expected to like, but ended up smiling at repeatedly.

The most important book I’ve ever read
Revisado: 01-05-23
If you roll me you would only ever read one more book, I’d tell you to make it this one.
It is not the funniest, or most entertaining. It is not the best written. It is, however, the most important thing I have ever read with regards to the effect will have on my life.

Historia
For most people, the story of their lives is just that: the accumulation of time, encounters, and actions into a cohesive whole. But for an unfortunate few, that day-to-day existence is affected - perhaps infected is a better word - by memetic incursion: where fairy tale narratives become reality, often with disastrous results.

Fairy tales meet Police Procedural
Revisado: 12-26-18
I read this book before i listened to it. I really liked it the first time around. Unfortunately the audio performance was... problematic in some non-trivial ways. The first was the voicing of Sloan's character. She's pretty prominent in the story but the voice actor chose to make her sound like an annoyed 90's Valley Girl. Even when the text was specifically "she deadpanned" it still came out as annoyed valley girl. The second was a character who is repeatedly referred to as The Nova Scotia Woman with a Nova Scotia accent, but she is presented with a strong Irish accent. I don't recall folks in Nova Scotia having strong Irish accents when I was there. The third is that when Henry's story is starting to overpower her, attempting to turn her into a full Snow White, she starts talking in what I suspect is supposed to be an innocent storybook voice but it comes across as the sacchariney way some people talk to babies. For me this _really_ knocked me out of the story at critical moments.
Mary's male voices we pretty good but they did feel like they blended together a bit at some times. She's a decent voice actor, I just have issues with some of the specific choices made for this book.
In the end the problems weren't bad enough that i stopped early, and I'll listen to the second book. The story itself was good enough that I enjoyed it the second time through even with the problematic voices.
