Most of this book is slow and tediously repetitive. How many times do we need to be told the same things about the same characters, and how many obvious signposts do we need? And then the story ends at a gallop, leaving an unanswered (but frequently referred to) mystery about DCI Warlow. I was left with an impression of the author slogging away at the beginning without re-reading, possibly unaware of the repetition, and then finishing the book in a series of all-nighters.

This story is strangely familiar. We just went through the Coronavirus pandemic. But this pandemic is bigger - every human being on the planet having to deal (or not) with the knowledge of when they will die. Different angles of the story are explored in imaginative depth. Human nature expresses itself for better or worse. So do politicians. It's all written in a straightforward way, not at all dark or negative. As a long-stringer 71-year-old, I can also relate to the short-stringers who are dealing with "only" having 20 more years to live. Yes, fascinating. This is an easy listen that's definitely credit-worthy.

Didn’t care about the characters, did care about the female narrator’s fake English accent. Gave up part way through.

This is the story of a guy who transformed himself from a fat loser with a bad attitude into an elite military superman. To exorcise his childhood demons he started out with goals, acquired discipline, then an obsessive drive for excellence, and finally learned to go way beyond his mind's self-preservation mechanism. Most people won't (and shouldn't) want to drive their bodies past breaking point, but Mr. Goggins is talking about mental processes that anyone could use. As he says, most battles are won or lost in your own head.

The book is full of blow-by-blow detail about the daunting and extreme challenges he embraced. I can't begin to compare myself (I'm a 70-year-old woman) but I've done one sport or another my whole life, and I intend to continue training and improving for as long as possible. Most of what Mr. Goggins says about progress, achievement and defeat rings true for me. The drivers and restrictors are all mental. Although I'm certain that I fall outside of the target audience, this book is for me too.

Obviously I found this worthwhile, but not a 5-star listen. Some parts were rather tedious and repetitive. I'm not a fan of the "bro talk" sections. I also became a bit confused about the timelines of the stories in some of his chapters. Not that important though. I got a lot of value from listening.

The book was a pleasant enough long listen, mostly about the fun Bernie had with other celebrities. I would have liked to hear more about his songwriting. I lost track of his love life and dozed off in places. In the words of Randy Jackson, it was just alright for me.

Brilliant exploration of Churchill's navigation of WW2. But I see that quite a few reviewers are critical of John Lee's narration. I'm an English born and bred baby boomer, and to me it's spot on for the time and place and especially for Churchill. Language moves on.... Watch any 1940s era American movie and the actors also "talk funny"!

Perhaps the story improves, but this book was not my idea of entertainment. Marianne's martyr complex and her horribly controlling husband set my teeth on edge. My self-esteem finally kicked in so I stopped torturing myself.

I'm as confused as Walt

Like all read-every-book Longmire fans, I was expecting a relatively normal adventure with perhaps a little Indian mysticism and the occasional ghost thrown in. We're used to that. Like many fans, I was a little disappointed to find Walt somehow stuck in a weird limbo that apparently included time and place travel. Now that I've finished I'm really not sure what happened, and I'm thinking about listening to the last two books again.

Was this book brilliant, or a mess? Not sure about that either, but it was certainly a grand feat of tying bits of past stories together into one huge ball of tangled string. Perhaps your reaction depends on whether you have a good memory or enjoy puzzles? I do, so I'll be generous with the stars.

Although Walt's much-postponed retirement looms once again, the ending leaves room for him to continue. I'm left wondering "whatever next?" Well, as long as George Guidall continues to read, I'm in.

I grew up in an English family that had some of the obsessive, unconscious and dysfunctional tendencies described here in repetitive detail. The awful mawkishness and toxic sniping of the characters was a blast from the past for me. At first I listened in fascinated horror, but then I wondered why I was still listening to content that made me squirm, so I did myself a favor and stopped. This title is highly rated, but I fail to see what is enjoyable about thin characters manipulating one another in nasty ways to satisfy a highly unlikely story premise.

I enjoyed Mr. Merullo's Buddha books very much. This one is written to the same formula - an ordinary, flawed man meets a holy man and gradually comes around to a degree of acceptance. The thing is, this formula works really well. The holy man has lessons for the sceptic (and us) to chew on. Set this on a contemporary American political/religious stage with a dose of wicked humor, bible parallels, shrewd observations, a top notch narrator, and it's a fascinating book.
