Historia
More than two decades after teaching English during the early part of China’s economic boom, an experience chronicled in his book River Town, Peter Hessler returned to Sichuan Province to instruct students from the next generation. At the same time, Hessler and his wife enrolled their twin daughters in a local state-run elementary school, where they were the only Westerners. Over the years, Hessler had kept in close contact with many of the people he had taught in the 1990s.

Good writing, yet too long and sprawling
Revisado: 11-25-24
Liked: excellent pronunciation of English and Mandarin, a few instances of memorable imagery, interesting commentary on U.S.-China relations and the modern experience of Chinese college students
Disliked: too many characters and storylines to follow, took months for me to finish because the story is sometimes disengaging and hard to follow.

Informative, yet disorienting flow
Revisado: 11-10-24
I liked that I learned more about local government design and fiscal solutions.
I disliked how the flow of the book often felt disorienting from one chapter to the next.

Historia
Former presidents have an unusual place in American life. King George III believed that George Washington’s departure after two terms made him “the greatest character of the age.” But Alexander Hamilton worried former presidents might “[wander] among the people like ghosts.” They were both right. Life After Power tells the stories of seven former presidents, from the Founding to today. Each changed history. Each offered lessons about how to decide what to do in the next chapter of life.

Enjoyable and enriching lessons in leadership!
Revisado: 03-11-24
As someone who enjoys American history and studies in leadership, I enjoyed this audiobook very much!
Read this if: you enjoy presidential memoirs and would like more details about specific presidents during their post-presidency. As someone who is familiar with most of these presidents, I still learned new things about all of them!
Do not read this if: you prefer a deep dive into one particular president.

Historia
As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.” And yet we humans don’t do this well. All around us are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood. In How to Know a Person, Brooks sets out to help us do better, posing questions that are essential for all of us: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them?

Compassion is key
Revisado: 11-29-23
I enjoyed Brooks’ synthesis of ideas. I found it most useful when he discussed how to ask narrative questions rather than judgment questions.
I was occasionally bored by hearing social psychology studies I’m already aware of.
Overall, an enriching listen for anyone interested in learning how to be a more attentive, compassionate and mindful conversationalist.

Discover the secret to flourishing in an age of division: belonging. In a world filled with discord and loneliness, finding harmony and happiness can be difficult. But what if the key to unlocking our potential lies in this deceptively simple concept? Belonging is the feeling of being a part of a group that values, respects, and cares for us—a feeling that we can all cultivate in even the smallest corners of social life.

Informative, especially politics chapter
Revisado: 04-24-23
I studied psychology in undergrad, so I was already familiar with some studies he mentioned.
The most notable contribution is the chapter on how to create belonging across political differences.
This book offers some practice advice based on psychological science on how to build belonging, yet it is not a self help book.
Narrator is okay. Not the most soothing voice, yet I got used to it.

In a time when Washington, DC and the country are more polarized than they have been for decades, John McCain is the rare public figure who has earned the respect of people on both sides of the aisle. He is a model for bipartisanship and political integrity. In his 40 years in politics, McCain has never been afraid to buck trends or ruffle a few feathers. His words are more important today than ever.

Enjoyable read!
Revisado: 01-03-22
I really enjoyed this book! I listened to it in less than a week! I enjoyed McCain’s stories about the 2008 campaign and domestic politics. Even though I disagree with some of his political views, Senator McCain was an inherently good, principled leader, and he shares his political philosophy and values in this book. There are multiple chapters that are heavy on his views of international affairs (especially Russia and Vladimir Putin), so be ready for that. He discusses many international adventures he went on. As someone who is more interested in domestic affairs, I found some of the international stories to be difficult to engage with. However, I still highly recommend this book to anyone interested in American politics, especially those interested in a piece of an admirable Senator’s story.

In other nations, public schools are one thread in a quilt that includes free universal child care, health care, and job training. Here, schools are the whole cloth. Today we look around the world at countries like Finland and South Korea, whose students consistently outscore Americans on standardized tests, and wonder what we are doing wrong. Dana Goldstein first asks the often-forgotten question: "How did we get here?"

Informative
Revisado: 08-26-21
I liked that it covered the history of American K-12 education. It was cool that the author focused on specific case studies of historical figures such as the founder of Teach for America and locations such as schools in Chicago and New York City.
I disliked how the narrator would pronounce years in the first decade of the 2000s (instead of “two thousand eight”, she would say “twenty oh eight”. It may just be a pet peeve of mine, yet it distracted me. Luckily, it was only an issue for the first couple chapters.
Overall, a solid book for anyone interested in the history of American public education up to the mid-2010s.

Historia
By the time of his assassination in 1963, John F. Kennedy stood at the helm of the greatest power the world had ever seen, a booming American nation that he had steered through some of the most perilous diplomatic standoffs of the Cold War. Born in 1917 to a striving Irish American family that had become among Boston’s wealthiest, Kennedy knew political ambition from an early age, and his meteoric rise to become the youngest elected president cemented his status as one of the most mythologized figures in American history.

A fantastic listen
Revisado: 07-31-21
I very much enjoyed listening to this book. I couldn’t stop listening! If you enjoy presidential biographies, this one is outstanding. It is meticulously well-researched and is also very readable. The narrator also does a great job, with his deep voice and his adjustment for different people’s voices.
The only part of the book I had trouble staying engaged on was some of the foreign policy talk when JFK was a member of Congress/Senator, yet that makes up a minor portion of an expansive book.
Overall, an amazing book that I highly recommend to anyone fascinated by JFK’s life and times up to 1956.

According to Jeffrey Rosen, Louis D. Brandeis was "the Jewish Jefferson", the greatest critic of what he called "the curse of bigness" in business and government since the author of the Declaration of Independence. Published to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his Supreme Court confirmation on June 1, 1916, Louis D. Brandeis: American Prophet argues that Brandeis was the most farseeing constitutional philosopher of the 20th century.

A quick, informative enjoyable read!
Revisado: 06-13-21
Very enjoyable if you are interested in Brandeis’ life and thought process. A mini-biography that focuses on his ideas. Author writes eloquently in connecting Brandeis to the past such as Thomas Jefferson and to the present with privacy rights. Narrator does not change his tone much, which may sound boring to some listeners (I didn’t mind too often). However, I flew through this book and I recommend it to anyone who would like to learn more about Brandeis in a manageable time frame
