So disappointed, hardly able to pay attention.
Revisado: 08-21-21
First let me say the only reason this book is not being returned is because it is by Stacey Abrams, and I have too much respect for her and her work. The story might be good, it might even be great … I am interested in the characters and got far enough into the story to wonder about the validity of the premise. But I just COULD NOT get past the reader. Did she read for the romance novels? If so, that seems like the only reason she would have been chosen. This is a smart, political thriller, people! Get with it … not some soppy … oh, never mind. It is only my respect for the author that kept me reading (I tried 3 or 4 times) but I just could not get past the disconnect between the reader and the story. It might be better to get in paper form.

Historia
In 1912 Ian Rutledge watched as a man was condemned to hang for the murders of elderly women. Rutledge helped gather the evidence that sent Ben Shaw to the gallows. And when justice was done, Rutledge closed the door on the case. But Shaw was not easily forgotten. Now, seven years later, that grim trial returns in the form of Ben Shaw's widow Nell, bringing Rutledge evidence she is convinced will prove her husband's innocence. It's a belief fraught with peril, threatening both Rutledge's professional stature and his faith in his judgment. But there is a darker reason for Rutledge's reluctance.

I can't keep dealing with the endings
Revisado: 03-13-21
Really, there are so many things that I have enjoyed about the books ... I have actually listened to 6 in a row ... but I just can not stand the cliff-hanger endings. No, that isn't right ... not exactly cliff-hanger, it is just that the books aren't finished ... it is as if the last two chapters are missing. I kept thinking that the next book, or the next one, will answer the questions ... what about Scotland? What about the unopened letters? What happen to the German? My level of frustration has overcome my desire to keep going to see if any of these, or many other, questions have answers. If this style of writing does not bother you then you will most likely enjoy this and the rest of the series. I was moved learning about France and WW I, I was not bothered (as some others were) about his very slow road to recovery from the trauma of war. And I found myself worried about what would happen to Hamish when recovery did finally come. But none of that was enough to put myself through the worry that I would be left stranded, yet again. I just could not do it.

Too boring
Revisado: 01-28-20
Not sure how the story would develop. I am unable to get past being so bored by the person reading the book. Yep, to me it was someone reading the book out loud, but the mostly in a monotone voice. Sadly I will be returning this one.

Historia
An isolated beach on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel is the scene of the murder of Guy Brouard, one of Guernsey’s wealthiest inhabitants and its main benefactor. Forced as a child to flee the Nazis in Paris, Brouard was engaged in his latest project when he died: a museum in honor of those who resisted the German occupation of the island during World War II. The St. Jameses must delve into Guernsey’s dark history - both past and present - and into the troubled psyche of someone who may have exacted retribution for the most unspeakable crime of all.

I love the complexity of the charactors
Revisado: 05-18-19
I hope Audible (or whomever) continues to present future Inspector Lynley book narrated by Donada Peters in their full book length. There is just so much going on, so many nuances, that are missed when the audible book is cut by half. In this book George continues to evolve the relationships between the men, the women, and the times they live in. Her stories have the same interest and head scratching 'what the heck does that mean?' to me, but what makes it intriguing are the relationships ... gender, class ... human.

Really, I just could not stand the editing ...
Revisado: 05-21-18
I have listened to Jack Ryan Jr. books before and loved them, so I decided to find out how it all started. But really, the editing was so poorly done that I had to return the book after the fifth time a sentence was repeated. And lets get on with the story, folks ... I do not need lectures for 10 or 15 minutes at a time about their philosophical views on if it is murder when you kill when you are in uniform. I could not keep going. I already purchased the second book in the series, I hope it is better than this one ... especially the editing.

Historia
In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective.

Introduction is missing
Revisado: 11-18-17
I have read all of Ms. King's book and have now decided to listen to them all ... I love Jenny Sterlin! However ... there is part of the introduction missing in this audio version. In the book version Ms. King tells how she came across the papers of Mary Russell ... I think a chest might have been left on her front step (sorry, it has been too long ago to remember the details). But it was quite charming. And in her most recent book, Mary Russell's War, there is even a reference as to why Ms. Russell chose Ms. King. I am hoping if a new version is released I will be allowed to replace this one for the new version.
Having said all of that ... this first book sets the scene as it were so there is a lot going on. I like future books because the characters are already known to me and the stories are allowed to be the focus. However, I love the characters, their interactions, and the extensive research that helps me to 'picture' the setting. If I think too much about the age difference it can be unsettling but given the war, their intellects, and Mary's history/personality it is a perfect fit.
Well done!

Even for free I couldn't finish this ...
Revisado: 09-01-17
Would you try another book from James Patterson and Maxine Paetro and/or Peter Hermann?
Back in the day I loved James Patterson and would read anything he put out. Then I just lost interest some where along the way and others took his place. I am not even sure why at this point. So having 'Private' a free down load was a nice way to get back on the Patterson (and now Paetro) track ... New characters, new team. I tried, for hours I tried. But I just can't finish it. So no, I would never try another book by this team. And it breaks my heart to say so.
What could James Patterson and Maxine Paetro have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
More depth ... More interesting characters ... There didn't seem to be a story unfolding, or if there was it was taking so long and it was so shallow that by the time I had 3 hours left to go I found it a relief to stop and start something else. (Really, anything else.)
Did Peter Hermann do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
An ok job. I would have to listen to him read something written by someone else to tell.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment because I had higher expectations ... Otherwise, not a ripple ... On second thought, not quite true ... I did realize I'm a bit tired of teenaged girls being victims yet again. Com'on... Isn't there an original thought out there?

I actually like the reader
Revisado: 01-08-17
I know there have been so many negative comments about this reader but I thought he was great, my favorite, actually. And I loved the story because Bosch was not such a jerk to his partner, he had compassion and was committed to training her. I'm a fan of the story and of the reader.

Excellent origin story
Revisado: 08-30-16
I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I also appreciate all of the reviews that mentioned the research that went into crafting the pieces which tied the story together. Unfortunately I stumbled early on over the reference to 'make lemonade out of lemons' and that stuck in my head. The first reference to that phrase I could find was early 1920's which was after the setting of this story. It made me question the rest of the research. However, having said that, I am a huge Holmes fan and enjoyed the story as I have enjoyed most all of the Holmes stores written by my favorite authors.
