Historia
Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

Finally another beautiful heart wrenching poetic masterpiece. I’ve been waiting since Where the Crawdads Sing for something to capture my heart in the same way. This one did not disappoint. I am sure I will listen again and again.

Historia
Sloane Caraway is a liar. Harmless lies, mostly, to make her self-proclaimed sad, little life a bit more interesting. So when Sloane sees a young girl in tears at a park one afternoon, she can't help herself—she tells the girl’s (very attractive) dad she’s a nurse and helps him pull a bee stinger from the girl’s foot. With this lie, and chance encounter, Sloane becomes the nanny for the wealthy, and privileged Jay and Violet Lockhart. The perfect New York couple, with a brownstone, a daughter in private school, and summers on Block Island.

Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

This book was such a fantastic read. I love a writer or film maker that can tackle intense life themes without making them feel dark and overwhelming. You’ll appreciate the title of this review after you read. Highly recommend!

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

I’ve never felt so mixed up about how to review a book. I think this was a beautiful story, with many amazing lines and metaphors. HOWEVER, it felt like an overgrown garden. It needs a really talented editor to come and weed out all of the extraneous information so that the real gems and characters of the book can shine. As it is, there was just too much stuff crowding out the story line. Listening to the full 31 hours felt similar to watching the four hour directors cut of a film. While beautiful, the edited version is just so much more compelling. I really wanted to love this book. But can’t say that I could recommend it. It took dedication to stay engaged and by the end I felt like I was barely hanging on - just grinding through it so I could see how things tied up. I would love to read an edited version of the same story. That said, you could quote tangibly feel the amount of love and energy the author put into it. Wish the editor could have done more to help shape their masterpiece.

Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

I just reread this and it felt like an old friend - but also entirely new. Having read it over 25 years ago - I suppose my experiences since reading it reshaped the POV in which I experienced the story. Can never get enough from
Kimgsolvers epically beautiful stories. She channels language in such a divine way. Worth a read-read!

Historia
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

As heartbreaking and complex as only humans are…
Revisado: 12-06-23
I have read every BK book and downloaded this one without reading anything about it. So I was in total shock for the first several chapters. First - I did not expect a male voice! Let alone a male as the central character. This is not BK’s usual voice. Literally and figuratively. Ha.
After getting over that initial shock, I was in aww that BK channeled this complex character, Demon Copperhead. The talent that takes as a writer - WOW. This story is not the typical journey I’ve experienced with other BK’s novels. The story is so raw, so heartbreaking, and unrelentingly painful, Non-stop. I wanted to give up several times. This was not a world I wanted to escape into. I kept listening however because I know of BK’s ties to this area of our country and I knew that if she wrote this book there was going to be a deep and meaningful message that needed to be shared. I’m so glad I stuck with it! Wow. What a gift. I can only imagine that birthing this story was likely the hardest of any she’s brought to life thus far in her career. If you’re looking for a novel to escape into for pure pleasure, this is not it. If you want to dive into a world outside of your comfort zone and be present for some hard and poetic truths - stick with it. I was overcome with gratitude and respect for the privilege my life has been surrounded with - simply by being born in a different area of our country.
Getting to the end is indeed like inhaling ocean air for the first time. Worth the journey.
On a different note, as a person in recovery, some aspects of this story were very triggering. Since I went in blindly - I was caught off guard by this. It certainly made my ability to relate to the character all that more real - but also that much more painful to re-experience. I wish I’d read it in a group setting so I had others to discuss it with. If your journey in recovery has been rewarding (and difficult!) it’s an extra special gift to get to the end with Demon. One chapter at a time. ;-)

Historia
As Martha Beck says in her book, “Integrity is the cure for psychological suffering. Period.” In The Way of Integrity, Beck presents a four-stage process that anyone can use to find integrity, and with it, a sense of purpose, emotional healing, and a life free of mental suffering. Much of what plagues us—people pleasing, staying in stale relationships, negative habits—all point to what happens when we are out of touch with what truly makes us feel whole.

“Is not I crazy me one!” Best news evar.
Revisado: 05-17-22
Words fail to express how profound and deeply moving this work of art is. I like many have read the texts of many incredible teachers, and while I’ll carry pieces of those teachings with me, no book has ever moved me the way this book has. Thank you Martha. ‘Is not I crazy me one’ will forever be a warm blanket on my heart as I travel along this crazy journey. <3

Someone give her a hug.
Revisado: 10-23-21
Man, I wanted to like this book and Megan as well, but it just was not done well. Her delivery is terrible. Moments that should feel vulnerable and raw, sound detached and resentful. Mostly, I just felt like I was listening to someone go down their list of resentments, and account for them one by one is a very defensible way. The contradictions she made in calling things out in others, and then one chapter later seem to claim about herself with pride. I was more impressed with her before reading this. I’m not sure that’s what her hope was. She just needs a serous month of hugs and sleep. Hang in there Megan. Away from the crowds. Just turn inward for a bit.
