Worst Witcher Book So Far

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would probably sprinkle more action into it. And not just "Oh, whoops, we've gone a few thousand words without a fight scene, better send a couple of assassins after Geralt", but action which actually has bearing on the narrative and impacts the plot. I would also really cut down on all the pointless political talk, and I would downplay Ciri's training in favor of a main plot featuring Geralt, since he's the protagonist of the book and the person we want to follow. Well, in fairness, I guess the book would have to be rewritten entirely.

What was most disappointing about Andrzej Sapkowski’s story?

I think that this book has two major crimes (I'm not talking specifics - if I were, the crimes would be a lot more than two) - it's boring, and it's pointless. Nothing happens throughout the book. Nothing. The entire book is basically an extended explanation about Ciri's training as a Witcher and, later, as a sorceress. That's it. There's a subplot about a group of people trying to find her and kill her, but that's never resolved. Really, you could have compressed this entire book within a single sentence - "Ciri trained with the Witchers and gained many of their skills, and later with Yennefer and understood magic". That's all that really matters. You really don't need to waste 10+ hours of your life to a story that's riddled with political talk and prolonged conversations about awkward subjects.

Have you listened to any of Peter Kenny’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I listened to Peter Kenny's other Witcher adaptations, and as always he was lovely. But not even he can salvage the snooze-fest that was "Blood of Elves".

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably, but only because I really love "The Witcher". And because I'd be curious to see if a movie adaptation can fix the huge problems of the book.

Any additional comments?

Skip this one, folks. Save your money, you're really not missing anything.

If you could sum up The Last Wish in three words, what would they be?

Thrilling, brilliant, engaging

Who was your favorite character and why?

Who's everyone's favorite character? It's Geralt, of course! Before reading the book, I was under the impression that he would just be a Batman-like stoic hero, but he's far from it. Sure, he's a badass, he knows everything about killing monsters and all that you'd expect from him, but he's also a good listener, he's considerate and not condescending, he even demonstrates a sense of humor at a few occasions!

What does Peter Kenny bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

While it is, once again, the boring answer that everyone would go to, it's definitely the voice acting. While some of the characters were a bit hard to understand (if you listen, you'll know exactly who I'm talking about), he overall did a very good job giving each one a personality, to the point where I was honestly a bit disappointed when I learned that Peter Kenny didn't voice Geralt in "The Witcher" games. He nails the character!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

"Last Wish - The Beginning of The Witcher" Boring and obvious, but hey, that seems to be the theme of this review, so who cares.

Any additional comments?

Overall, I can't find much wrong with "The Last Wish" - it's just great from start to finish. Definitely a good read for anyone regardless of how familiar they are with the franchise.

If you could sum up A New Dawn: Star Wars in three words, what would they be?

Decent, Not Perfect

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting, or at least entertaining, part of the audiobook in general was the performance, which was brilliant. Marc Thompson is truly a man of a thousand voices and, even with a bit of artificial modification here and there (when necessary), he managed to bring a cast as diverse as that of a "Star Wars" novel to life in ways that not many can. The least interesting part once again goes back to some of those characters, who aren't particularly fun or memorable. I finished the book mere minutes ago, and I already don't remember the names of some of the side characters.

What about Marc Thompson’s performance did you like?

Everything. The man is a genius, and I am certainly going to be looking into more of his work. Brilliant, BRILLIANT voice acting and narration.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

"Star Wars: A New Dawn - A Thrilling Adventure Where A Bunch Of Star Wars Side Characters Thwart A Quality Inspection Manager's Plan To Destroy The World"

Any additional comments?

Overall, the book didn't leave much of an impression on me. It wasn't bad, and there certainly wasn't anything wrong with it, but there also wasn't a moment or a character that I could stand up and say "Oh, yeah, now THAT is what I'm talking bout!" Not a bad effort, for one of the first books in the new Expanded Universe, but others have done it better.
