Didn’t want the author’s whole life story

I was fine hearing about the basics of the author’s journey with IBD, but not her whole life and family story. I was looking for practical advice on dealing with IBD and there was nothing new here.

I really appreciate all the science Attia brings to bear on this topic, but I kept wanting the punch line: Exactly what do I do? More exercise? I knew that. Better diet? I knew that. Stronger stability? Knew that too. I did not need a book to convince me. I needed a workable plan and it was hard to piece one together with this book or the PDF. If it's on there, I could not tell from the table of contents and I did not have the patience to listen for 17 hours to find it.

I am a huge Holmes fan. I have read all of the Conan Doyle books multiple times. This was my second try with Lovegrove. The first was a disaster, but I thought I would give him the benefit of the doubt and try another. This one is bad also. The main character is more like a parody of Holmes, but it is not Holmes. The plot is disjointed and ludicrous. It was not a good listen and I could not finish it.

It addresses the issues of sexuality in long term relationships really well in a very relatable way.

I am a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes by Conan Doyle. I have read all the works multiple times. I have also read some decent non-Conan Doyle books about Holmes. But this is a Holmes book in name only. The main character is nothing like Holmes. The plot is chaotic. The narration is not great. I could only get halfway through it. It is an insult to real Holmes fans.

Let me summarize this book for you so you won't waste your time. If you are a husband not getting enough sex, IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT. You are an insensitive, uncaring SOB who doesn't deserve her. Your only salvation is to basically start anticipating, and catering to, her every need. She bears no responsibility. Forget about the fact that you bust your butt supporting her. According to the author, that is what God intended.

This is BS and I can't believe this quack has counseled "thousands of couples," although I am not surprised given my experience with couples counselors.

Here is an outline of the chapters I read:
1. Here's a guy who had a rough upbringing.
2. Excruciating detail about his upbringing, blah, blah blah. That' most of the chapter, his sad story.
3. Chapter ends quickly saying BJJ turned his life around. Not how it turned his life around, just that it did.
4. End of chapter.

No lessons learned for me.

I could only make it through the first chapter and gave up. The title of this book and the description were just what I was looking for, but I was sorely disappointed. It was not about focus, but about procrastination, which is related, but not at all the same. The prose is flat..The author infuses no personality into the writing at all. It is like he is just talking down to his audience. He keeps repeating himself, which is annoying. Maybe there is gold later on in the book, but he does not preview the book at the beginning and there are no chapter titles in the Audible version, so I never got there.

The audiobook was very frustrating because the narrator keeps telling you to "stop the tape and write THIS down in your notebook." Do they not realize a lot of people listen to audiobooks in the car or while doing something else? I think Sajnog's stuff is great, but it doesn't work in audio. Also, as an author, I think he is a bit condescending.

I will say the author is a good writer and narrator and he tells a fascinating tale about his month long caribou hunt in Alaska. He offers some good information about the value of getting out of your comfort zone, but he doesn't really offer much in the way of life changing practical advice the average person can follow. Basically, unless you are willing to take two weeks off to climb Mt. Killamanjaro (like a friend of mine just did) you are out of luck.
