Historia
The Barnes family is in trouble. Dickie’s once-lucrative car business is going under—but Dickie is spending his days in the woods, building an apocalypse-proof bunker with a renegade handyman. His wife, Imelda, is selling off her jewelry on eBay and half-heartedly dodging the attention of fast-talking cattle farmer Big Mike, while their teenage daughter, Cass, formerly top of her class, seems determined to binge drink her way through her final exams. As for twelve-year-old PJ, he’s on the brink of running away.

whole lot of nothing
Revisado: 02-27-24
after reading mark and the void, was stoked for more of Murray's books. but as much as i tried to stay optimistic, this turned out to be just a dull and repulsive slog. the proximity to each character made me feel subtly dirty. was thinking maybe they're intentionally all just gross and vapid? but didn't seem that intentional, idk. and all the mysteries that are set up, get knocked down one by one in the most bleary way possible. highly recommend a pass on this one.

Historia
One Christmas Eve in a small hollow in Boone County, West Virginia, struggling songwriter Jesse Walker witnesses a strange spectacle: seven devilish figures chasing a man in a red suit toward a sleigh and eight reindeer. When the reindeer leap skyward, taking the sleigh, devil men, and Santa into the clouds, screams follow. Moments later, a large sack plummets back to earth, a magical sack that thrusts the down-on-his-luck singer into the clutches of the terrifying Yule Lord, Krampus.

Historia
In Iain Reid’s second haunting, philosophical puzzle of a novel, set in the near future, Junior and Henrietta live a comfortable, solitary life on their farm, far from the city lights, but in close quarters with each other. One day, a stranger from the city arrives with alarming news: Junior has been randomly selected to travel far away from the farm...very far away. The most unusual part? Arrangements have already been made so that when he leaves, Henrietta won't have a chance to miss him, because she won't be left alone - not even for a moment.

was sorta like a washed out version of that ishiguro book cant remember the name. very very washed out. it's weird how there's these almost standardized ideas of the future that perfectly align in so many visions of it, yet in each are supposedly singular and mind blowing. i dont get it

Corey vs Story
Revisado: 11-07-23
This book is tough, bc it's such a difficult balance between the noxious relentlessly lame Corey and such a compelling story. I've almost quit so many times, but I WANNA KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. Being inside this guy's head just makes me feel dirty, he's worse than any disease that could've come from the island

One seriously bad book
Revisado: 10-27-23
I listened to The Firm right before this, and the characters are at least very consistent. Mitch and Abby are the least likeable people I've yet encountered in any book, and they stay the course thru this one. They are seriously the worst, and it's really hard to hope for anything good for either. The big difference though, is The Firm is a great plot, and actually picks up steam as it goes. This one however, wow, it's like a maybe interesting plot? That then just stumbles blindfolded off a cliff. It's like amazingly bad. I think only worth reading for how bad it is, the badness is sort of mystifying and compelling. Just wish Mitch and Abby could've been the drivers to go see that bridge..

Historia
In June 2021, a senseless event upends the lives of hundreds of men and women, all passengers on a flight from Paris to New York. Among them: Blake, a respectable family man, though he works as a contract killer; Slimboy, a Nigerian pop star tired of living a lie; Joanna, a formidable lawyer whose flaws have caught up with her; and Victor Miesel, a critically acclaimed yet commercially unsuccessful writer who suddenly becomes a cult hit. All of them believed they had double lives. None imagined just how true that was.

1st half 5* 2nd half 1*
Revisado: 07-01-23
super compelling premise and characters, then everything's just like thrown on a fire in the 2nd half, which reads more like a victory lap. totally flips the script and negates 1st half. plus incorporates all these tired passive aggressive liberal tropes, like jabbing at trump and christians, and creepy drawn out fawning over stephen colbert :/ total letdown. but up to like 6 hours, fantastic. could be edited to just that and be a great book
