A good listen
Revisado: 10-13-23
This was an interesting tale and I love Davina Porter’s narrative skills. This is supposed to be a Christian book, but it wasn’t any more religious than how people of that time period would have believed, so I felt that part made it a more accurate depiction of the times. I also appreciated the brief references to the canal and the canal boats, which were a significant part of some villages life back then, but not often employed in British historical fiction.

Interesting concept, gratuitous violence
Revisado: 10-10-23
I had to listen at a faster speed because the narration was soooo ponderous. The concept was interesting but, while violence was integral to the plot, there was much gratuitous violence that got worse as the story went on. I almost didn’t finish it because of this.

Wanted to like the story, but the narration got in the way
Revisado: 05-08-23
I can’t get past the anomaly of the main character being voiced as an American when he was supposed to be British and the supporting characters had British accents (very diverse and well executed accents, I might add). On top of that, the continual angry and/or cynical intonation is unnecessary and distracts from the story line. I am struggling to get through it.

Historia
A mysterious virus has infiltrated the good people of Lake Wobegon, transmitted via unpasteurized cheese made by a Norwegian bachelor farmer, the effect of which is episodic loss of social inhibition. Mayor Alice, Father Wilmer, Pastor Liz, the Bunsens and Krebsbachs, formerly taciturn elders, burst into political rants, inappropriate confessions, and rhapsodic proclamations, while their teenagers watch in amazement. Meanwhile, a wealthy outsider is buying up farmland for a Keep America Truckin' motorway and amusement park.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Gaskell’s writing is so descriptive and Eve Matheson’s characterizations are so empathetic. I did not anticipate most of the plot twists and so it was captivating until the end.

No genius in this book
Revisado: 01-02-22
Whether this book was meant to be a commentary on the superiority of British over Scottish divorce law at the time or a general didactic to women contemplating divorce, it fails if it was intended to be an engaging story regarding either.
The general low quality of the storyline may have been redeemed if it had been read by a woman. The masculine narration contributed to the general heavy handedness of the story and that particular narrator lacked the range to properly voice any of the female characters, of which there were four. Coupled with his habit of ending almost every sentence as if it were the end of a paragraph, it made the narration drag. I listened to the end hoping for some redemption, but I was disappointed.

Too much gratuitous sex and violence
Revisado: 12-29-21
I think the presenter is doing a great job, but I am having difficulties getting through this book. Every other page is either filled with violence or sex. It’s like having to listen to someone who can’t converse without constantly swearing. So far, there doesn’t seem to be much other content. Does it get more engaging?
