Historia
Vincent is a bartender at the Hotel Caiette, a five-star lodging on the northernmost tip of Vancouver Island. On the night she meets Jonathan Alkaitis, a hooded figure scrawls a message on the lobby's glass wall: Why don’t you swallow broken glass. High above Manhattan, a greater crime is committed: Alkaitis's billion-dollar business is really nothing more than a game of smoke and mirrors.

Interesting ideas but …
Revisado: 12-15-22
There are too many peripheral characters, and the personalities seem underdeveloped. I liked her book “Sea of Tranquility,” which prompted me to listen to this one. Some of the characters overlap, but “Glass Hotel” feels more like a work in progress.

If you liked the show, you are likely to enjoy this book. In many ways, it’s like an extended monologue from the show. The bonus is you get a little insight, not too much, into the man behind the show.

Historia
By 2016, it was impossible to ignore an international resurgence of xenophobia. What had happened? Looking for clues, psychiatrist and historian George Makari started out in search of the idea’s origins. To his astonishment, he discovered an unfolding series of never-told stories. While a fear and hatred of strangers may be ancient, he found that the notion of a dangerous bias called “xenophobia” arose not so long ago.

Historia
Rabbits is a mysterious alternate reality game so vast it uses the entire world as its canvas. Since the game started in 1959, 10 iterations have appeared and nine winners have been declared. The identities of these winners are unknown. So is their reward, which is whispered to be NSA or CIA recruitment, vast wealth, immortality, or perhaps even the key to the secrets of the universe itself. But the deeper you get, the more dangerous the game becomes. Players have died in the past - and the body count is rising. And now the 11th round is about to begin.

Interesting but writing is a bit weak
Revisado: 06-29-21
The authors ideas about parallel universes, electronic games and AI are combined in an interesting way, but the prose style is too breathless and repetitive for my taste. A bit like Stephen King’s “11/22/63” in that there are elements of a potentially magnificent story, but the telling is somewhat flat and comic-bookish.

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

First Steven King I’ve read - disappointed
Revisado: 12-15-20
I assumed that because his books are so popular that he would be a good writer. I’ve never been a fan of the horror genre, so this is the first of his books I’ve been attracted to.
It has interesting ideas and a reasonably engaging plot, but the writing itself seems crude and repetitive. It leaves me wondering whether his earlier books were better crafted, but I am not inclined to find out.

Historia
In Overcomplicated, complexity scientist Samuel Arbesman offers a fresh, insightful field guide to living with complex technologies that defy human comprehension. As technology grows more complex, Arbesman argues, its behavior mimics the vagaries of the natural world more than it conforms to a mathematical model. If we are to survive and thrive in this new age, we must abandon our need for governing principles and rules and accept the chaos.

Interesting concepts, but somewhat repetitive
Revisado: 10-02-20
This is an important book - it sheds light on how complicated many of our technologies have become, to the point where there is often no one who understands the entirety of a program, system, or device. And that is why parts of systems interact in unexpected ways (Toyota's unintended acceleration problems are one example he uses). But he doesn't just expose the problems of complexity, he also suggests strategies for dealing with complexity, and in so doing draws parallels to the complexity of living things. Very interesting, but sometimes I was eager for him to move on to the next idea.

This exquisite, resonant novel by PEN/Faulkner winner James Salter is a brilliant portrait of a marriage by a contemporary American master. It is the story of Nedra and Viri, whose favored life is centered around dinners, ingenious games with their children, enviable friends, and near-perfect days passed skating on a frozen river or sunning on the beach.

Captures the lives of 1960s New Yorkers
Revisado: 04-01-20
Only the central characters are fully formed. The rest are sketched on the periphery. They may make extended appearances, as the narrative wanders into their stories, but in the main thread comes back to Viri and Nedra. One feels their emotional perspectives keenly, and learns from them. Jhumpa Lahiri has a nice appreciation of this book on-line.
