compared to the other James Clavell books, this one is not as well narrated. His pronunciation of Japanese phrases and words is so poor that the listener can't understand what he's trying to say.

mermaids screaming?
Revisado: 03-16-15
Where does The Mermaids Singing rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I love mysteries and this one was outstanding. A great beginning to the Tony Hill/Carol Jordan series to which I am looking forward to reading more of the books.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot wasn't a complete surprise to me because I had watched the television series based on these books, Wire in the Blood starring Robson Greene. I purchased the book based on fond memories of the quality of the TV series. I only wish that I had read the book first.
Have you listened to any of Graham Roberts’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. Excellent narration. His use of regional accents is a nice touch.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes... and I did complete it in one very long day!

Any additional comments?
This is the second time that I have read all of the "Kate Shugak" novels back to back and in order, both because the novels are exciting, darkly humorous, well written, and entertaining, but most of all, because I have either visited or lived in every location Kate has. This makes Kate's experiences all the more vivid.
Dana Stabenow has the gift of really making those locations and Kate's experiences come alive to the reader.

Gerald Dickens, great, great grandson of Charles Dickens, reads this traditional tale.Oliver Twist is the second novel by English author Charles Dickens. The time honoured story is about the orphan Oliver Twist, who escapes from a workhouse and travels to London where he meets the renowned Artful Dodger, leader of a gang of juvenile pickpockets. Oliver is led to the lair of their elderly criminal trainer Fagin, naively unaware of their unlawful activities.

Brilliant narration
Revisado: 10-31-12
Would you listen to Oliver Twist again? Why?
I will probably listen to Oliver Twist again, even though I have already read it several times.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Oliver Twist?
I love the contrast between Dickens descriptions of his "evil" characters; Bill Sykes, Fagin, and his "good" characters; Oliver, Nancy. My favorite scenes are the comedic ones between Mr. and Mrs. Bumble.
What about Gerald Dickens’s performance did you like?
Gerald Dickens is a brilliant narrator who accurately imitates every regional accent necessary to this cast of characters; a skill I greatly admire.
When I purchased this version of Oliver Twist, I had to chose between a couple of very fine narrators and was pleasantly surprised that Gerald Dickens was not just trying to "cash in" on being the great grandchild of Charles Dickens, but is highly skilled and talented in his own right.

"Dickens on Dickens"
Revisado: 09-30-12
If you could sum up The Chimes in three words, what would they be?
As a loyal Dickens follower, this was still a delightful surprise
Who was your favorite character and why?
Trotty Veck was my favorite character representing all which was honest and good in the social class of the poor during Dickens time, in spite of staggering adversities.
Which character – as performed by Gerald Dickens – was your favorite?
Gerald Dickens is an unexpectedly brilliant reader who performs many voices with ease and excellence. He is obviously not just content to "ride on" the successes of his great-great grandfather.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This work was new to me, and took such an unexpected direction and so caught me up in the suspense, that it frequently made me chuckle.
Any additional comments?
This work is very similar to A Christmas Carol in many aspects. I am very surprised that it is not better known by the reading public, since The Christmas Carol is so popular and so frequently performed.

Self-deluded and self-centered heroine
Revisado: 03-17-12
Would you try another book from Philippa Gregory and/or Bianca Amato?
Yes, as I have read many of Philippa Gregory's books and enjoyed them.
If you’ve listened to books by Philippa Gregory before, how does this one compare?
Very well written book and historically quite accurate.
It was, however, very difficult to remain invested in a main character who was so difficult to respect or to empathize with. She was impossible for me to like, although perhaps her personality was just not sympathetic to me.
Was The Red Queen worth the listening time?
Yes. As I am very interested in that period of history, this was the second time that I listened to this book. It is of particular interest when combined with the other two books of this series: The White Queen, and The Lady of the Rivers. This series is unique in representing this period of English history from a woman's point of view.

Historia
Set during the time of the Napoleonic Wars, this classic gives a satirical picture of a worldly society. The novel revolves around the exploits of the impoverished but beautiful and devious Becky Sharp who craves wealth and a position in society. Calculating and determined to succeed, she charms, deceives and manipulates everyone she meets. A novel of early 19th-century English society, it takes its title from the place designated as the centre of human corruption in John Bunyan's 17th-century allegory.
