Johannes Cabal, a brilliant scientist and notorious snob, is single-mindedly obsessed in heart and soul with raising the dead. Well, perhaps not soul.... He hastily sold his years ago in order to learn the laws of necromancy. But now, tormented by a dark secret, he travels to the fiery pits of Hell to retrieve it. Satan, who is incredibly bored these days, proposes a little wager: Johannes has one year to persuade 100 people to sign over their souls, or he will be damned forever.

A meandering Stephen King-esque tale of... something
Revisado: 11-23-24
I bought this based on hype and a recommendation from Stephen King. And like a lot of modern tales of horror and the supernatural, the story was full of well-described locations and characters, unrealized potential, and the utter lack of an actual point. I definitely struggled to finish this one and won't be recommending it to anyone.

Revisado: 10-31-24
An excellent blend of Urban Fantasy, Alien invasion Sci-Fi, and Military Sci-Fi, with a nice, sardonic lacing of with and humor. Maybe the best in the series so far. 👍🏾

Historia
When Rin aced the Keju - the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies - it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard - the most elite military school in Nikan - was even more surprising.

Meh, at best...
Revisado: 07-21-24
I enjoy stories with heart and depth, with character growth and unexpected twists and turns. Unfortunately, this story was closer to a YA novel. The protagonist was whiny and grew not at all from the first page to the last, seeming like a 14-year-old girl the entire time. The scope and scale of the war was academic rather than visceral. The secondary characters were thin and as a result difficult to tell apart.
I almost set this story aside several times. For all the hype I've run into regarding this book, it fell far short of delivering on what could have been an epic story. Hugely disappointing. :/

Same Ledger team, but leaner and meaner
Revisado: 07-28-21
I've noticed that the world that the author has created with the Joe Ledger novels has gradually changed focus. The threats still follow a similar vein but they have become more visceral, more personal.
Ledger has been shown to be conflicted and troubled about the things he has experienced. Here, this inner turmoil has begun to affect his interpersonal relationships, the way he speaks to colleges, and the choices he makes.
This novel could well be a turning point for the character. all of the points I mentioned get turned up a notch here. Beyond the graphic nature of combat in all it's bloody detail, Mayberry has added greater context and given the settings and actions of the characters finer detail. With this novel, he is beginning to breath life into the ugliest of realities, in the world, in those around us, in ourselves.
So, yeah.. I recommend this book. Now, if you will excuse me, I need to buckle up and prepare for where this new Joe Ledger series is about to take us.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Same Martian humor, more complex science
Revisado: 07-02-21
If you liked The Martian, a basic course in science involving interplanetary travel, you're going to LOVE Project Hail Mary. Weir ups his game by crafting an advanced narrative science course involving interstellar travel and alien contact. Told with his trademark wit sprinkled with pop culture references, this book was well-written and highly entertaining, so much so that I can't wait for the movie adaptation just so I can see the characters come to life.

Historia
In The End Is Always Near, Dan Carlin looks at questions and historical events that force us to consider what sounds like fantasy; that we might suffer the same fate that all previous eras did. Will our world ever become a ruin for future archaeologists to dig up and explore? The questions themselves are both philosophical and like something out of The Twilight Zone.

Outstanding exploration of historical context
Revisado: 03-11-21
fans of Mr. Carlin's Hardcore History podcast will know what I mean when I say that each chapter in this book brings a visceral, well-researched exploration into how the events of the past inform our present as well as our future. Carlin's central thesis that the end is always near is shown to have layers made up of the potential for disaster we have always lived with. Whether it be the consequences of our own actions, or the luck of the geographical or microbial draw, the end of mankind is not merely talking us; it shadows us every day of our lives and in every step that we take.
And yet, hope springs eternal. We in fact KNOW we can not only DO better, but BE better. In spite of the unknown. in spite of the darker corners of human nature.
This book is the Ying to our society's yang. Rather than glossing over or ignoring the bad, the dark, and the distasteful, it takes a long hard look into it with the intent on filling out the questions we ask of ourselves so that we might find answers that might truly make a difference as we navigate a future that is however clouded and uncertain.
