I have dealt with anxiety and intrusive thoughts since early childhood. Though I have always been highly functional, now I am in my late twenties, and my symptoms have taken a turn for the worse. I chose to listen to this book to supplement my weekly meetings with a cognitive behavioral therapist. The central tenet of this book is a paradox: in order to gain some distance from your anxious thoughts, you need to bring them closer, and examine them with a curious mind. Running away from bad feelings only makes those feelings stronger and more creative. I do NOT think this book is for everyone: people who live in violent neighborhoods or who have experienced PTSD, for example, might not find it helpful to think of their anxiety as a welcome, metaphorical messenger (though I cannot speak for them). However, as a young, white woman who struggles with perfectionism and persistent unease, despite her many privileges, I found this book healing and insightful.
