Throughout the book trilogy, there were cryptic mentions of the Savage Gap, a brutal period in the past that set the stage for the main story. It created an unsettling tone that highlighted the murky morality of the series. In the Bone Maiden, the author takes us on an unflinching trip through this period. Coupled with a haunting narration, the audiobook version creates a sense of dread and apprehension that is not easy to shake. A great listen for thriller and horror fans.

Full disclosure: I had already listened to the individual titles before the box set was released. I then received a promo copy from the publisher. (Thank you!) This worked out great because my husband had yet to experience the series. We listened to the box set together during our daily walks which prompted some great discussions. He thoroughly enjoyed the story and was very impressed by the narration. And while he loved the main trilogy, his favorite part was The Bone Maiden prequel. This saga is a fresh and thrilling take on an old theme. If you enjoy deep and suspenseful science fiction (with a dash of horror), then you'll love the Immortal Wake.

I was very curious to see how the narrator was going to handle the tonal shift between the second book and this one (for obvious non-spoiler reasons). Any fan of the series knows that this would be a difficult transition to pull off and I am please to say that Eric Burgher did a fantastic job. His mastery of the saga up to this point has been a treat to experience, so hearing his full embodiment of a battered protagonist was very rewarding. (I think I actually applauded at the very end.) The Mortal Vestige is a heavy coda to a harrowing series and I thoroughly enjoyed the listen.

Thursday Midnight is my favorite book of the Immortal Wake. It has everything! Tension, humor, heart, and dreadful anticipation. It also has the Axeman, easily one of the most haunting villains I have ever read. Eric Burgher does a wonderful job bringing this psycho to life. Every one of his scenes raised the hairs on my neck. Bravo!

The Immortal Wake has always been a favorite series of mine. I love the gritty realism, the dark suspense, and the brutal commentary of a society in transition. It's also a fresh and fantastic take on an old legend. I think Burgher has perfectly captured the tone and tension that Wheeler created. He's a wonderful Jonas and his depictions of the remaining cast are all on point (especially Doren). I cannot wait to see what he does with Thursday Midnight, my favorite of the series.

I was already a big fan of the Max and the Multiverse series, so listening to the audiobook was a no-brainer. Hannibal Hills does a fantastic job in bringing these zany characters to life. Ross is hysterical, Max is pitifully adorable, and Zoey and Perra continue to kick some serious butt. And of course there's Lord Essien, everyone's favorite psycho villain, who Hills inhabits with hissing glee. I loved hearing all the witty interactions, especially at the mining planet. This is a delightful and hilarious adaptation. An easy recommendation to any fan of humorous science fiction.
