Always the Twists and Turns
Revisado: 02-20-25
I love Peter James' Roy Grace mysteries!
His Grace series have the same attention to detail and descriptive prose as some of the great English mystery writers of the past, but with a totally modern slant.
The development of his characters, through the series, keeps my interest up to see what happens with them all in book after book.
In Need You Dead, I kept hoping that Roy's arrogant boss, Pew, would finally be taken down, but you will have to read the book, with its twists and turns to find that out!
Being a part of Grace's thinking and agonizing to solve the mystery, is also a great technique to keep my interest up to the end.
I recommend reading the Roy Grace series in order, or as close as you can, to keep up with the characters, both good and bad, as they move through the author's clever twists and turns of Roy Grace's career and life.

Historia
Days before one of Hollywood’s hottest stars, Gaia Lafayette, leaves her Bel Air home for a movie role on location in Brighton, England, there is a bungled attempt on her life. The whole city of Brighton awaits Gaia’s arrival, including her dangerously obsessive number-one fan looking for revenge and an anxious Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, charged with protecting Gaia. When a mutilated torso is found on a chicken farm miles away in the countryside, the police have no reason at all to connect this to the star’s visit to the county....

One of James Best
Revisado: 01-06-15
I've read all of Peter James Detective Superintendent Roy Grace's books, and this was one of his best!
The plot moves along nicely and is easy to follow. Grace and his usual cast of characters pull together the pieces of this mystery with their usual wit and dry Brittish humor in order to deal with the horrors of their job. Yet James writes in such a way that graphic violence is kept to a minimum. It's nice that this book finally lets the reader find out the full story of the history of Grace's first wife Sandy, which makes it easy to root for his current love, Cleo.Yet, having followed the history of Sandy's disappearance, it is only the reader who knows, and poor Grace is left still in the dark.
The ending is a nail biter, made even better by the rendering of the superb reader of this series. He moves easily from one character's voice to another, and puts the reader on the edge of their seat with drama or laughing at the character's personality quirks.
This series is best read in order, as James skillfully weaves references and characters throughout his series. That said, mystery lovers will love any of his books as a stand alone.

Historia
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. Jane Neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of Three Pines just north of the U.S. border, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it's nothing more than a tragic hunting accident, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods.

Good Timeless Mystery
Revisado: 09-29-12
This review written by Jane Fine
It is wonderful to discover a contemporary writer who can spin a good mystery without extreme descriptive violence. Ms. Penny gets the point across about the violence of the murder through psycological nuance rather than having to resort to detailed blood and gore. So much can skilfully be said with "less is more" style of writing.
Penny's characters are interesting, although I kept feeling one of the characters in the story was a few steps ahead of the detective in finally "figuring it all out"; but the detective shows a great understanding of human character, much like Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot and Jane Marple, so like them, he puts it all together for the cast of characters in the end.
I gave it 4 star's rather than 5 because I feel that, overall, the book could have been longer with a bit more flushing out of various character's personalities for more depth. I was just left with a little bit of disappointment in that regard.
I'm already on to Ms. Penny's next mystery in the series! Certainly worth that.
