Historia
Naila’s conservative immigrant parents have always said the same thing: She may choose what to study, how to wear her hair, and what to be when she grows up - but they will choose her husband. Following their cultural tradition, they will plan an arranged marriage for her. And until then, dating - even friendship with a boy - is forbidden. When Naila breaks their rule by falling in love with Saif, her parents are livid.

Love it😍
Revisado: 12-12-22
I heard the author speak maybe five years ago and kept this book on my list but never seemed to get to it. Finally, I decided to get the audio and I could not stop listening. This is such a compelling story. As a mom, I felt so much for every character. As parents we can make horrible mistakes with the best of intentions. I am so invested in these characters, I was sad that Saeed has shifted to other stories-high I am sure I will find equally profound-but there are so many untapped stories here. And lastly, thanks to the author for such a clear inside peek at a culture that is so different than my own.

Best sad book I’ve ever read
Revisado: 01-05-19
I try to avoid books about child abuse. My book club picked this one. This author does a great job of telling us horrible truths in manageable doses. We see these characters as survivors and not victims. This is a story is filled with love and sweet relationships. We care about them. The writing is spot on. Every scene is well crafted. This is a story that I will live with for a long time.

Historia
Millions of fans of Little House on the Prairie believe they know Laura Ingalls - the pioneer girl who survived blizzards and near-starvation on the Great Plains, and the woman who wrote the famous autobiographical books. But the true story of her life has never been fully told. Now, drawing on unpublished manuscripts, letters, diaries, and land and financial records, Caroline Fraser masterfully fills in the gaps in Wilder's biography.

Amazing
Revisado: 08-31-18
So, I feel like my education in US history was sadly lacking. If we had studied what happened to the environment during this time period maybe we would make different choices in our present. I found the life story of Laura Ingals Wilder fascinating even though I never read the books as a child.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Wowza!
Revisado: 06-20-18
I kept forgetting this was a memoir. It is a book that I am handing off to everyone I know right now. The writer tells her story with beautiful thoughtful language and the grace that is only achieved on the healing side of trauma. I loved this book but hated that this wonderful young woman had to live this story. She is a warrior, a survivor and a genius. How did she do it? It’s breathtaking.

Deborah Harkness’s sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches, has brought her into the spotlight and galvanized fans around the world. In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and a descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, deep in Oxford's Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont.

Good if you like vampires
Revisado: 03-22-18
So, why don't I like vampires? You would think it would be the blood but no. Women act idiotic around vampires. Even the bright and talented Diana finds herself completely enveloped in Mathew's life to the point that she is willing to loose her self. It's cliche and foolish. The story is well written and I will read other stories by Harkness but I have very little patience for either one of these main characters.

Oh how I wanted to like it
Revisado: 01-12-18
I wanted to like it. I wanted to see women take on strength in a way we have not know in modern culture. Instead, this is a story of how power corrupts. I will read Alderman again because she has a brilliant imagination but I didn't enjoy the direction she too this idea.

A Rare Reread
Revisado: 01-12-18
I originally read this book 7 or 8 years ago but was delighted to hear that my book club selected it. It is completely unique with its beautiful language, historical fiction, wacky romances and bizarre happenings. There are murders, ghosts and monsters both human and otherwise. Our dear author reaches deep into an imagination shockingly more vast than the ordinary and presents us with the story of the girl next door in a world only a breath away from the one we see every day. Just listen.

There's a murderer on the loose - but that doesn't stop the girls of St. Etheldreda's from attempting to hide the death of their headmistress in this rollicking farce. The students of St. Etheldreda's School for Girls face a bothersome dilemma. Their irascible headmistress, Mrs. Plackett, and her surly brother, Mr. Godding, have been most inconveniently poisoned at Sunday dinner.

A charming, oddly funny, light mystery. I especially appreciate reading a story placed in the Victorian period that isn't so heavy and portrays the depth and wit of young women.

Jesse J. Holland's The Invisibles is the first book to tell the story of the executive mansion's most unexpected residents: the African American slaves who lived with the US presidents who owned them. Interest in African Americans and the White House are at an all-time high due to the historic presidency of Barack Obama and the soon-to-be-opened Smithsonian National Museum of African American Culture and History.
