Historia
The epic tale of the rise to power of Russia's current president—the only complete biography in English–that fully captures his emergence from shrouded obscurity and deprivation to become one of the most consequential and complicated leaders in modern history, by the former New York Times Moscow bureau chief.

Full account of a secretive man over many decades

Narrator mispronounces many Russian words giving neither the Russian pronunciation nor the usual English. He even mispronounces some English words, and his phrasing is sometimes very odd, as if he doesn’t know what is coming next but just reading words. Myers’ work, however, is brilliant, impressively researched and written to keep interest high even when relating masses of facts and figures. He manages to give positive reasons for Putin’s popularity and glimpses of the humanity of the secretive KGB operative who became a cruel dictator over time.

Historia
Peking in 1937 is a heady mix of privilege and scandal, opulence and opium dens, rumors and superstition. The Japanese are encircling the city, and the discovery of Pamela Werner's body sends a shiver through already nervous Peking. Is it the work of a madman? One of the ruthless Japanese soldiers now surrounding the city? With the suspect list growing and clues sparse, two detectives - one British and one Chinese - race against the clock to solve the crime before the Japanese invade and Peking as they know it is gone forever.

Nonfiction that reads like a novel

Amazing reconstruction of an actual murder investigation in the last days of Old China. Great research. Narration at times monotonous.

Historia
The Renaissance in Florence conjures images of beautiful frescoes and elegant buildings - the dazzling handiwork of the city's skilled artists and architects. But equally important for the centuries to follow were geniuses of a different sort: Florence's manuscript hunters, scribes, scholars, and booksellers, who blew the dust off a thousand years of history and, through the discovery and diffusion of ancient knowledge, imagined a new and enlightened world.

Narrator Ruined Book
Revisado: 09-18-22
In future I will look for the narrator’s name before purchasing and will not buy anything narrated by James Cameron Stuart. In every sentence he seems to be showing off his perfect OxBridge accent and perfectly pronounced foreign names without ever actually interpreting the story and making it interesting. Every sentence is declaimed with the same stentorian tone, the same rhythm and pacing. Boring and insulting assaults on the ears.
