Historia
Newly divorced, almost-empty-nester Celeste is finally seeking adventure and putting herself first, cliches be damned. So when a friend asks Celeste to “partner” with his buddy John for an event, Celeste throws herself into the role of his temporary girlfriend. But quiet cinnamon roll John isn’t looking for love, just birds—he needs a partner for Tucson’s biggest bird-watching contest if he’s ever going to launch his own guiding business. By the time they untangle their crossed signals, they’ve become teammates…and thanks to his meddling friends, a fake couple.

Birding Is Its Own Benefit
Revisado: 06-10-24
I had no idea what to expect, but when Jess K. Hardy posts about a book, you add it to your TBR. This story was so beautifully honest, that it takes your breath away. To write a believable conflict between two people who communicate as openly as Celeste and John do takes a special author and there’s no question Sarah Dubb has what it takes. These two characters navigate new relationships after heartbreak in a relatable and admirable way. My only complaint is there isn’t a backlist of Sarah T. Dubb for me to get lost in this summer. But, that leaves me more time for my new birding interest, so I can’t be too upset!

My heart belongs to Imogene
Revisado: 08-28-23
Don’t get me wrong…Tommy is great as well, but the star of this book is undeniably Imogene. She is as vibrant and powerful as any of the explosions she sets and it’s no wonder she loves chemistry as she has it in spades with Tommy. Her character was unabashedly herself at every turn and never questioned whether being “too much” ever meant she was not enough. May we all be Imogene’s version of too much.

Historia
Millicent Watts-Cohen is on a mission. When she promised her elderly best friend that she’d reunite her with the woman she fell in love with nearly eighty years ago, she never imagined that would mean traveling from D.C. to Key West with three tablespoons of Mrs. Nash’s remains in her backpack. But Millie’s determined to give her friend a symbolic happily-ever-after, before it’s (really) too late—and hopefully reassure herself of love’s lasting power in the process.

Wonderful Road Trip Romance
Revisado: 07-17-23
When I started this book, I didn’t know what to expect. I ended up loving it! Another way to put it is that I am in love with Hollis Hollenbeck, lol! Millie is pretty awesome, too. The story flows well and the unexpected spice was excellently placed. You get a full circle happily ever after without any unnecessary drama and just enough conflict to be believed. A+ from me!

Narrators were great, story was just ok
Revisado: 06-13-23
Justice for Daniel. He deserved better than Alexis, who took the entire book to realize something that should have been obvious from the start of the book. Also, thirty-eight years is too long for a woman to go without a backbone and there’s no way she would’ve survived med school and residency alive without one.

Historia
Hallie Welch fell hard for Julian Vos at fourteen, after they almost kissed in the dark vineyards of his family’s winery. Now the prodigal hottie has returned to Napa Valley, and when Hallie is hired to revamp the gardens on the Vos estate, she wonders if she'll finally get that smooch. But the starchy professor isn’t the teenager she remembers and their polar opposite personalities clash spectacularly.

Julian deserves better
Revisado: 02-13-23
I typically enjoy Tessa’s books; however, this one had two flaws that so badly out of the story, and I just couldn’t ignore them. First, SPOILER ALERT, the idea that a vintner would allow people to plant flowers willy-nilly all through his vineyard, is not just ridiculous, but against everything any vintner worth their salt would stand for. At best it would impact the grapes, at worst it would ruin the entire harvest. Second, and more importantly, I could not stand the heroine in this novel. She was selfish, childish, petulant, and annoying. The idea that you can go through life missing appointments not really caring about anyone else’s schedule, but your own, and still have customers for your business is insane. She was one of the worst heroines I’ve ever read. Julian on the other hand, was a wonderful hero, who had an excellent character arc. My heart aches for him that he was stuck with Hallie. He deserves so much better.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

This Book Is A Triumph of the Female Spirit
Revisado: 01-27-23
Chemistry as a science has always seemed daunting to me, so it delayed my reading this. Thank goodness for my book friend whose opinion I trust implicitly for telling me to read this. From the very start of the book, the reader is immersed in the struggle of of women to be seen as more than less than. But in a way that touches the heart and offers hope, rather than despair. It emphasizes how far things have come, while reminding the reader of how far we all have left to go and that only by coming together can we ever truly get there. This book is a must read. Do it. You’ll be better for it.

As a third-year PhD candidate, Olive Smith doesn't believe in lasting romantic relationships—but her best friend does, and that's what got her into this situation. Olive needed to woman up
Revisado: 09-09-22
After hearing so many positive things about this book, and the review of it on the Heaving Bosoms podcast, I decided to give it a listen. It did not disappoint for the most part. I liked the injection of science into a romance. It was a very different take. I didn’t like *spoiler alert* that a heroine who’d spent the majority of the book lamenting the unfair treatment of women in STEM contemplated not reporting a blatant case of sexual harassment and allowing a predator to continue his ways all because doing so might damage/impact her love interest’s grant funding. The world dynamic we’re now in here in the fractured states of America probably impacted my viewpoint; however, it also seemed a little off-brand for Olive to think Adam would even want to continue his association with someone like that. Also, the failure to communicate honestly went on way too long for me. This trope of extended misunderstanding / miscommunication needs to die a natural death in the romance genre. Get over yourself, act like an adult human and tell the person how you feel!
The writing was good - a fact that stood out to me even more because of the talented way scientific terms were used throughout the story without confusing a person (me) with zero background in STEM. And the sex scene, although toeing the line of unbelievable, was spicy in all the right ways.
I’d definitely say this one is worth a read/listen!
The only reason I didn’t give the narration five stars is because I didn’t love when she vocalized Adam’s part. His voice sounded too….slow is the only word I can think of.

Nora Stephens' life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

Nora is my spirit animal
Revisado: 05-11-22
Is there an upside to spending two straight days putting out mulch and sweating out all the moisture in my body? If you answered yes, being able to finish listening to Book Lovers - you win first prize! First prize being, of course, that you get to help me put out the rest of the mulch! But seriously, this book was amazingly well-written and so beautifully relatable. For a lot of people, the abstract idea of an independent, driven woman like Nora is a lot easier to deal with than the reality of her. Even knowing that, Nora doesn’t apologize for who she is. Instead, she leans into it and I couldn’t love anything more. It’s about time we had a heroine who is driven instead of ditzy and a man who not only loves that about her, but does everything he can to encourage it. Also, I want Julia Whelan to narrate my life!
