Historia
From the translator of the best-selling Poetic Edda comes a gripping new rendering of two of the greatest sagas of Old Norse literature. Together the two sagas recount the story of seven generations of a single legendary heroic family and comprise our best source of traditional lore about its members - including, among others, the dragon slayer Sigurd, Brynhild the Valkyrie, and the Viking chieftain Ragnar Lothbrok.

Dry Academic Reading
Revisado: 06-25-24
This work violates the first principle of storytelling: show, don't tell. Unfortunately, the reading accommodates that style perfectly. The author should have let a professional read it.
The author reads it in a monotone at exactly the same mind-numbing rhythm all the way through the four plus hours.
If you want a dull synoptic recitation of the plot, it's for you.

Historia
We met Earl in 1990; we parted seven years later. So many little events had to fall into place before we met him that it seemed decreed above for him to become "our" Earl. He'd just chuckle to hear that, though. "Those jokers," he'd say about us. "They knew I was strictly a loner." What we also knew was his biggest secret. In this often humorous, true story, two homeowners go head-to-head with their tenant Earl, a quiet old loner and military retiree from the South.

Stumbling Across a Polished Gem
Revisado: 12-30-20
I have to admit a certain pride finding this unpublicized gem. It is a well-crafted story by an unrecognized author, a short read--one that disappoints in only that you don't want it to end just yet. The author offers her story with the same skill as an accomplished chef--she cleverly leaves her audience wanting more but inexplicably satisfied.
Earl was a unique individual, a generic type that few of us will ever encounter or understand. The story is Baumgarten's puzzle figuring out just who Earl is. Is she glimpsing into the soul of a tragic figure, a tale of mental illness? Or is he a rare enigmatic species who lives an inoffensive life of ignorance and genius, never causing others joy or pain? Either way, Earl leaves scarcely a mark by his long life, making it difficult to decide whether to feel pity or admiration.
Yet the author finds that Earl did contribute to her and her family's life. It was a contribution of contradictions, crafted according to his own eccentric rhythms, his own perhaps undeserved contentment from his own puzzling perspective.
Read it or listen to it. It's length is perfect for an evening of solace and easy contemplation. You may even find yourself writing fan mail encouraging her to produce another volume.

It is a bit dated scientifically. Observations he made back in 1968 were novel then. Now, not so much.

Historia
Adopting the structure and themes of the Arthurian legend, Steinbeck created a Camelot on a shabby hillside above the town of Monterey, California, and peopled it with a colorful band of knights. At the center of the tale is Danny, whose house, like Arthur’s castle, becomes a gathering place for men looking for adventure, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging—men who fiercely resist the corrupting tide of honest toil and civil rectitude.

I just don't. I have enjoyed other Steinbeck works, but this one just didn't do it for me.

Good Thrillers Don't Have to be Complex
Revisado: 10-18-19
The original plot and characters had promise, but the plot turned into a convoluted ("oh, they will never see this coming!") mess full of holes and unnecessary characters all ending up behaving unrealistically. Keeping it simple would have far better served the author who shows talent, but made overthinking the plot line into an unfortunate extreme.

Historia
Nate Temple's all-consuming quest to avenge his parents is temporarily put on hold when shape-shifting dragons invade St. Louis. And perhaps cow-tipping the Minotaur for answers might not have been Nate's smartest opening move, because now every flavor of supernatural thug from our childhood nightmares is gunning for him. Nate learns that the only way to save his city from these creatures is to murder his best friend.
