Historia
Civil war on the world of the atevi is over, but diplomatic disputes and political infighting continue unabated. Bren Cameron, brilliant human diplomat allied with the dominant Western Association, has just returned to the capital from his country home. But his sojourn was anything but restful, for Bren and his associates have had a small war of their own to contend with, ending with rebel leader, Machigi, joining the atevi congress representing the rebels as a member state.

Intellectual Action!
Revisado: 06-25-23
This book is full of thinking, wondering, figuring out, much more thrilling to read than people killing one another. The Narrator, Daniel Thomas May, is superb and makes the thinking even more interesting and exciting.

Historia
No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen cloistered monks live in peace and prayer. They grow vegetables, they tend chickens, they make chocolate. And they sing. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world-famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose effect on both singer and listener is so profound it is known as “the beautiful mystery.”

Better read than listened to
Revisado: 01-30-23
The Chief and Jean-Guy go to an isolated monastery to solve a murder. The 24 (well, now 23) monks are devoted to Gregorian Chant and the story is full of how divinely beautiful their music is. However, the narrator has the opposite of a divine voice: he drones, and drones, and drones. Some attempt at accent, no attempt at conveying the story with nuanced reading. So read the book and hear it in your imagination.

Historia
The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

.Andy Serkis reads well, sings terribly
Revisado: 09-25-21
Rob Inglis, the old Recorded Books LOTR reader, sings very nicely the many songs in the text, enhancing the listener’s enjoyment.
For some reason, the producer of this new Recorded Books LOTR thought that Andy Serkis should sing the poems. He is a brilliant actor and reader, but his singing is painful to listen to and really detracts from my enjoyment of the recording.

What stories!
Revisado: 08-31-21
Christopher Tolkien, J. R. R. Tolkien’s son and literary executor, has spent years compiling the history of Middle Earth from his father’s pages and pages of manuscripts. With academic precision, Christopher has assembled the stories in this book that complement the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings, and the Silmarillion. And Samuel West as the stories’ narrator is superb, as sensitive a reader as Tolkien pater was a story teller. The producer, to amuse us, has Samuel’s father Timothy reading Christopher’s editorial notes, making this audio production a double father/son affair.

Historia
Critically acclaimed author Alastair Reynolds holds a well-deserved place “among the leaders of the hard-science space opera renaissance." ( Publishers Weekly). In Blue Remembered Earth, Geoffrey Akinya wants nothing more than to study the elephants of the Amboseli basin. But when his space-explorer grandmother dies, secrets come to light and Geoffrey is dispatched to the Moon to protect the family name - and prevent an impending catastrophe.

Revisado: 03-14-21
The protagonist is so stupid and weak that it is painful for me to listen. I’m disappointed because Kobna Holdbrook-Smith does a very good reading and Adjoa Andoh, my favorite, reads books 2 and 3. Oh well

Historia
Aster lives in the low-deck slums of the HSS Matilda, a space vessel organized much like the antebellum South. For generations the Matilda has ferried the last of humanity to a mythical Promised Land. On its way the ship's leaders have imposed harsh moral restrictions on dark-skinned sharecroppers like Aster, whom they consider to be less than human.

And under the Raven's watch, the city flourishes. But the power of the Raven is weakening. A usurper has claimed the throne. The kingdom borders are tested by invaders who long for the prosperity that Vastai boasts.

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Historia
When those alien entities called "humans" sent their first exploration ship into Compact space, the traditional power alliances of the seven Compact races were catastrophically disrupted. And, giving shelter to Tully, the only surviving human, Pyanfar Chanur and her feline hani crew were pitched into the center of a galactic maelstrom, becoming key players in a power game which could cause an interstellar war, or bring the last hope for peace between eight barely compatible alien races.

One of my favorites
Revisado: 09-26-17
The Chanur books by C J Cherryh are ones I have read more than a few times. I thought I would enjoy listening to them, and indeed the stories are as interesting, the characters as well developed as I remember, but the narrator leaves much to be desired. She lacks preparation, her characterization voices are much the same for different characters within species or with stereotypical earthly accents for aliens, and she mispronounces words, most egregiously the name Skkukuk, which she turns into a confusing homonym with Sikkukkut, two different characters. I suggest listening to these books only after reading them because of this narrator’s performance.
