ACK!!! Audible don't switch narrators!!!!
Revisado: 12-09-16
Dear Audible, this is a series! Voices ARE the characters. I like this narrator for other things but it is so unfair to narrators, readers, and authors to swap narrators in a series. I am trying to get into this second book but it hurts.

Start to a great series
Revisado: 09-30-16
I just finished listening to all three in this series. The first book is a bit slow, but the entire series is well worth the time and credits. Delightful series that really just begin in the last chapters of the first book.

This is a lovely book, not driven by plot but by character and ideas. For me it was an interesting exploration of the range of motion of the human brain, soul, and imagination. Worthwhile especially if you are already a fan of Elizabeth Berg.

Historia
The promise, as I remember it, happened this way. Happy and content in his hometown of Aurora, Minnesota, Cork O'Connor has left his badge behind and is ready for a life of relative peace, setting up shop as a private investigator. But his newfound state of calm is soon interrupted when Henry Meloux, the Ojibwe medicine man and Cork's spiritual adviser, makes a request: Will Cork find the son that Henry fathered long ago?

One of my favorites in the series so far!
Revisado: 01-09-15
This is one of my favorite Cork O'Conner books because of the background it provides for one of the great characters in the story: Henry Meloux. I highly recommend this book. It is tough to change narrators in the middle of the series, but it only took a few hours of listening to adjust to a new voice for characters that feel like old friends. If you've liked any of the books in this series, you will appreciate this one.

Great story! Fast-paced ride with the good guys
Revisado: 08-06-14
I almost didn't get this book because of the mediocre reviews and complaints about narration. This is my first John Gilstrap book, and I sympathize with listeners who have listened previously and accustomed this character with a different narrator, always tricky. As a new listener however, I thought the narration was just great and fitting for someone who had inherited a ton of family money and has such outrageous and dangerous adventures and therefore fitting. If you're looking for a book that is fun, not too predictable, with a satisfying ending, and good guys to root for, this is it. A solid 4 star listen.

Great characters but heavy handed activism
Revisado: 06-29-14
I listened to this after enjoying the Last Origional Wife by the same author. The characters are so likeable, flawed, real and there is just something lovely about this writing. I found the info about domestic violence a little bit heavy handed...I think it comes across more strongly in audible from rather than written form perhaps, but it was listen worthy. Robin Miles provides excellent narration, really loved her voice, she is now one of the my top 5 favorite narrators and hope she narrates many more.

If Jodi Picoult and Gillian Flynn had a baby....
Revisado: 09-28-13
This book had the real, complex and tragic characters like a Picoult novel, and the shocking mind-bending ending of a Gillian Flynn thriller (although you have to wait till the end to realize it). I really enjoyed this read, especially the second half where it picks up steam. Don't miss the epilogue, with it's mind-bending revelations!. So many times, I thought I knew where it was going, and usually I was only half right.
The epilogue also ties up loose ends and answers questions regarding the future, which is very satisfying and rare in this age of ambiguous open-ended conclusions.
I will admit a couple times it dragged on so I'd skip the last 3 minutes of a chapter and pick up at the next starting point without missing a beat. I listen to relax and don't have that much patience for inner turmoil, which is the only thing that keeps this from being 5 stars for me, however I am impatient and that is as much a reflection on my listening style as on the book itself.
This book is worth getting and especially worth listening until the end.

In Ordinary Grace, Krueger looks back to 1961 to tell the story of Frank Drum, a boy on the cusp of manhood. A typical 13-year-old with a strong, loving family, Frank is devastated when a tragedy forces him to face the unthinkable - and to take on a maturity beyond his years.

Extrodinary Novel
Revisado: 04-10-13
This book works on many levels. It is a mystery story, you won't want to put it down. Most of all Ordinary Grace is an extraordinary work of fiction. It is a coming of age story with themes of family, sorrow, justice, resiliency, forgiveness, and perhaps most of all faith.
If you like any one book of any one of the following authors I think you will like this book: John Irving, Kent Haruf, Leif Enger, Marilynne Robinson, David James Duncan.
Also, I really appreciate when audible adds the author interview after the reading, this one was interesting.
