Alton’s Most Personal Book
Revisado: 02-07-25
Through his career, Alton Brown has been notoriously private, which I respect. It is delectable to learn a little bit more about the man he is and how he came to be. I would covet a second edition of his essays. I think he has so much to share, and I will listen to every word. I am profoundly grateful that his wife bullied him into writing this book.

How has the Big Blue Boy Scout stayed so popular for so long? How has he changed with the times, and what essential aspects of him have remained constant? This fascinating biography examines Superman as a cultural phenomenon through 75 years of action-packed adventures, from his early years as a social activist in circus tights to his growth into the internationally renowned demigod he is today.

Incredible research
Revisado: 01-24-25
The research in this book of the history of Superman is impeccable. This is a great book, but I would have enjoyed a hard copy more. Surprised that the narrator who spent years as the voice actor for Superman for animation, frequently sounds like he’s making fun of the subject. It’s just something about the tone. Other than that, I really enjoyed this.

Historia
It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

One of the most lush audiobook productions
Revisado: 01-02-25
The entire production of this audiobook is perfect. I struggled getting through this book when I was in high school, but with this audiobook, I could not stop listening until I was done. Andrew Garfield and Cynthia Erivo but put their whole souls into their acting for this book.

Historia
Tom Felton’s adolescence was anything but ordinary. His early rise to fame in beloved films like The Borrowers catapulted him into the limelight, but nothing could prepare him for what was to come after he landed the iconic role of the Draco Malfoy, the bleached blonde villain of the Harry Potter movies. For the next ten years, he was at the center of a huge pop culture phenomenon and yet, in between filming, he would go back to being a normal teenager trying to fit into a normal school. Speaking with great candor and his signature humor, Tom shares his experience.

Who knew Tom Felton was such a brat in his younger years. All kidding aside, I am glad to see this former child star come into his own and have such mature and heartfelt perspectives to share. A thoroughly enjoyable listen.

I basically gobbled up this audiobook. It’s succinct, entertaining and provided insight into some of the rumors. The best part, though, was just getting to hear his voice again. I’m grateful that he left a body of work behind for us to continue exploring after his death.

Historia
Saved at the Seawall is the definitive history of the largest ever waterborne evacuation. Jessica DuLong reveals the dramatic story of how the New York Harbor maritime community heroically delivered stranded commuters, residents, and visitors out of harm's way. Even before the US Coast Guard called for "all available boats," tugs, ferries, dinner boats, and other vessels had sped to the rescue from points all across New York Harbor. In less than nine hours, captains and crews transported nearly half a million people from Manhattan.

A story that should have been told, but perhaps could’ve been told a bit better
Revisado: 10-14-24
This book had my attention around the beginning and regained it towards the end, but the middle sagged. It seemed like there was some filler, like stating facts that had already been stated more than once. However, this is certainly a story of heroism that did not get a fair share of attention in the early days after 9/11. It’s a story every American should know.

Historia
When Chief Joe Pfeifer led his firefighters to investigate an odor of gas in downtown Manhattan on the morning of 9/11, he had no idea that his life was about to change forever. A few moments later, he watched as the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center. Pfeifer, the closest FDNY chief to the scene, spearheaded rescue efforts on one of the darkest days in American history.

A firefighter who lived through more than 9/11
Revisado: 09-21-24
Joseph Pfeiffer is one of the most-recognizable firefighters of 9/11 and the first captain who was on the scene. Afterward, he took the crucial role of turning the lessons learned into process improvements. I didn’t know he also had an important coordination role during the “miracle on the Hudson” and was on the ground for a massive residential fire caused by Hurricane Sandy. Well worth a listen, although the narration is a little too sedated.

Historia
Modern knowledge workers communicate constantly. Their days are defined by a relentless barrage of incoming messages and back-and-forth digital conversations - a state of constant, anxious chatter in which nobody can disconnect, and so nobody has the cognitive bandwidth to perform substantive work. There was a time when tools like email felt cutting edge, but a thorough review of current evidence reveals that the "hyperactive hive mind" workflow they helped create has become a productivity disaster, reducing profitability and perhaps even slowing overall economic growth.

Historia
According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan.

Really brings to life one of my all-time favorite books. The show is a little different from the book, so it was interesting hearing how the cast interpreted the original text.

Behind-the-scenes aviation stories of 9/11

There were stories here I haven’t read elsewhere, especially from military and the other pilots in the sky on that horrible day. Narrator does her best to emulate accents, although it does come off a little odd sometimes. Never forget!
