Historia
In 1793 William Smith, a canal digger, made a startling discovery that was to turn the fledgling science of the history of the earth - and a central plank of established Christian religion - on its head. He noticed that the rocks he was excavating were arranged in layers; more important, he could see quite clearly that the fossils found in one layer were very different from those found in another. And out of that realization came an epiphany.

Useful and comprehensive review of this hinge point in history
Revisado: 01-15-24
This is not just about Erasmus and Luther. it is about the whole period of time and all of the national and political and social developments that were occurring around the same time. The author has expertly woven those things together using the life stories of these two men as a lens through which to see the way European intellectual thought progressed and ultimately how it went in the directions it did.

outstanding book, perfectly narrated
Revisado: 01-20-23
I am incredibly surprised to have found this book as compelling as any historical work I have read in the past decade. I postponed reading it, but now wish I hadn't done so. The author perfectly weaves together an understanding of the arms themselves and the historical environment in which those arms were produced and used. most fascinating to me is the continual thread the author weaves throughout it, from the musket versus rifle debates of the late 1700s all the way to the model M4 rifles of this century. outstanding scholarship, and deft craftsmanship.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

superb extension to Weir's legacy

Same great hard science, but this time extended to a sci-fi scenario that is fantastical and plausible at the same time. And much more appropriate for younger scientists. can't wait for whatever is next.

a comprehensive treatment
Revisado: 10-10-22
If you don't follow the discussion of neurology, heritability, and behavior, this might be a bit dense for a primer. However if you are even moderately familiar, this book will provide a synthesized and thorough review. It covers most topics well, from intelligence to neuro psychological disorders, and provides all the appropriate caveats on how this science can be misunderstood or misused. The ending is a tad unsatisfying, in it that it quickly tries to sum up key points while also keeping the author out of political hot water, which wasn't necessary in my opinion, given the thoroughness of the approach throughout.

General Alex Dumas is a man almost unknown today, yet his story is strikingly familiar—because his son, the novelist Alexandre Dumas, used his larger-than-life feats as inspiration for such classics as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.

An important and overlooked biography
Revisado: 08-23-22
The research and writing are exemplary. But what really shouts out for attention is the way the tale of Dumas Sr. summarizes the story of racism and slavery through a powerful exception to the rules of the day. General Dumas was an outstanding example of courage and determination, one that compelled many in his day to rethink or at least overlook race. Until the tide turned back against him, tragically. I'm surprised more people aren't acclaiming this book, especially at this crucial time. Highly recommended.

I'm polynesian, and also a former academic who studied these issues last in the mid 90s. I hadn't kept up with the latest and this book not only got me up to speed, but significantly added to my knowledge of the past. Wonderfully told, I recommend it for its scholarship and narrative power.

Historia
In the spring of 1812, Napoleon Bonaparte was at the height of his powers. Forty-five million called him emperor, and he commanded a nation that was the richest, most cultured, and advanced on earth. No army could stand against his impeccably trained, brilliantly led forces, and his continued sweep across Europe seemed inevitable.

Book can't decide what it's really about
Revisado: 09-14-21
Is this a story of Napoleon's undoing or is it about a unique and once common infection? The book should have picked one and focused on it. I would have preferred the latter - indeed the notes at the end are some of the most interesting because they deal with that later path of the pathogen. As an audio book, this narration is stellar, highly recommended.

Backman does it again!
Revisado: 05-05-21
This author really gets people, and delights in revealing them to you subtle layer by subtle layer. The narrator similarly brings nuance to the voice characterizations, especially difficult given that it requires translating idiomatic characters and language from one region to another.
