Patty Duke was a hard act to follow, much less to imitate. I don’t know who chose this narrator, but the decision to give the job to Kathy Garver was unfortunate. I was so unnerved and agitated by the sound of Garver’s voice that I couldn’t force myself to listen to Anna’s commentary beyond the first few names in the long list of celebrities. I feel cheated, because I would like to know what she said about them. I’ll certainly buy the print copy. Could they possibly have found a voice more unlike Patty Duke? I’m still scratching my head over this one. Kathy Garver has proven her talent as an actress but her voice is too unlike the Patty we remember. I get the impression that this was a rush job, and rather than take their time to do it right, somebody used poor judgment. The importance of one’s voice to those who care cannot be exaggerated. We shouldn’t expect an exact impersonation, but neither should we settle for too much dissonance. On the positive side, I’m thankful for the book and it’s memorial to a lovable actress of great substance and courage.

About a third of the way through The Mutiny of the Elsinore, I decided to read, rather than listen to the story, and let Jack London rest In peace. I think this narration must have him turning in his grave. As for the narrator, he should occupy himself with something else…something he doesn’t have to ruin.

Good narration of what might otherwise be a tiresome,
uninteresting and much too wordy story.

Justin Brierley may be an excellent choice as narrator for British listeners, but as an American listener I find him intolerable. He completely ruins the information for me and leaves me no choice but to return the book and order a print version. Someone ought to know better than to subject listeners to a British narrator whose accent has all the charm of a rusty wheel, in my opinion.

Julie Harris's voice is Dickinson's voice.

Julie Harris knows the heart and soul of Emily Dickinson. For the listener, Harris's voice is Dickinson's voice. Surely her reading is the standard that others attempt to reach. The poems are a wonder of poetic artistry in themselves, and Julie Harris's skill is a separate and additional subject of study----more than worthy of a five-star review. However, the book's format doesn't allow one to see the title of any of the 47 poems listed; and I wasn't able to choose my favorites from the list to listen to first or to hear again. I find this to be a serious flaw by the editor and extremely shortsighted. I wonder if this doesn't belie the editor's knowledge and interest in the subject of poetry altogether. Perhaps the publisher will correct this shortcoming..
