Historia
In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

Revisiting the Past
Revisado: 01-09-12
I was born in 1940 in Atlanta Georgia. I grew up a white child in the same culture that was the norm at that time in Jackson Mississippi. We were lower middle class in the era of Jim Crow. No house servents for us,but since we were white we were still members of the ruling class. Fortunately for me my parents were kind, honest people and what is now referred to as the "n" word, was not used in our house, but we were still southern racists This book took me back on a journey to my past as I saw my own change Slowly I went from a confused little white girl to a 21st century adult. My first memory of strange adult behavior was my Mother calling me inside the house because I was playing with two little black girls who, unlike me, had a tricycle. Her explanition that, "the neighbors wouldn't like it if they saw us", made no sense at all to me at 4 years of age. I accepted the racist behavior of my extended family because that was just the way things were. Thanks to the USAF and my Minnesota born husband, I have shed most of those attitudes prevelent in the South at that time.
I highly recommend The Help because it sheds light on a part of American culture that is difficult to understand if you didn't grow up believing it was normal.

Makes me think of "Battling Banjos"
Revisado: 11-29-11
The reader was very good and provided most of the positive aspects of this book. but the story caused me to have to struggle to stick to it to the bitter end. The main character was obviously boreingly dysfunctional, and I consider the book a wasted audible credit.

Must Read for CAT people
Revisado: 11-22-11
If you love cats, don't miss this one! You will laugh and you will cry and and you will remember the cats you have loved and have had the honor of being tolerated, acepted, or sometimes even loved by. I will listen to this one again and again and will think of Matilda, Willamina, Chester, Bunyip, Arlene, Albert and all the other furry friends (more than 30) who have shared my life.

A big improvement!
Revisado: 05-13-11
This version is a BIG improvement over the version done by Scott Brick. I still prefer Kate Reading's version, but I certainly count the Christopher Hurt version as a close second. Audible, spend the money and purchase the Kate Reading version from Books on Tape. If you offer a book for download, make it the one done by the best reader.

Historia
In a scrap heap within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts? In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible, one man sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike.

Kate Reading was a much better reader
Revisado: 04-13-11
I have a cassette recording narrated by Kate Reading from Books on Tape that I have had for several years.Since I don't care forScott Brick but wanted to get a version I could load on my iphone I went ahead and wasted a credit on the Audible version. I am now considering buying a cassette player so I can listen to Ms Readings much better version. Audible, please consider purchasing the BOT version. It is MUCH better.

Jonathan is a Jewish college student searching Europe for the one person he believes can explain his roots. Alex, a lover of all things American and unsurpassed butcher of the English language, is his lovable Ukrainian guide. Listen before you give!
Revisado: 07-04-08
I really loved this book. It is charming and funny, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it for young teens. For older teens and adults yes, younger teens no! I gave it a single star rating as a kids book but as an adult book it deserves 4 stars. Mentioning certain sexual practices and specific descriptions of the size of anatomical features were very funny for me as an older adult, but perhaps aren't something the average 13 year needs to be reading quite yet.
