They are the Lost Legions. Famed warriors in the annals of military history, made famous when they struck out for the stars to fight a Savage invasion ... never to return or be heard from again. Until new evidence is uncovered that a Lost Legion sleeps in the pocked craters of a distant mining world. Sergeant Carson Metzger, a replacement pilot for a Republic HARD HK-PP mech unit, is sent to act as security for the science team seeking to confirm the discovery of the fabled missing legion. But when the local miners object to the arrival of Republic forces, tensions simmer to an all-out boil.

Solid story.
Revisado: 01-23-25
Well done side/world building story. I like the legion, but it's nice to get stories on the lesser branches.
I like mechs but would really like a tight focus story on a tank crew. There are many infantry/marine, fighter pilot, mech pilot, & and ship captain books out there, but virtually no tank or fighting vehicle ones.
Here's to hoping for the future.

Large fall from a great start.
Revisado: 01-20-25
I was expecting a action packed finale. There are only 10 days to conclude this arc, for a world wide war. What I got was a snooze fest of whiny flashbacks, therapy crap talk, no clear story focus, and piles of unfinished storylines.
The last 2 books before this were already dropping in quality, but I was told he was gonna address their shortfalls. He didn't, instead it doubled down on the bad.
I've enjoyed his early books, but he's changed his style and target audience. This is where I stop with all his series.

Better than I expected.
Revisado: 12-23-24
With Larry only helping on the story I didn't expect too much. An established author giving a favor to someone starting out.
Don't know how much weight Larry's opinions carried for the story but I found it quite compelling.
Not enough books take inspiration from WWI, but rather WWII, so it was a nice difference to read.

Chick Bowdrie could have ridden the outlaw trail, but the Texas Rangers recruited him, because they didn't want to have to fight against him. Pursuing the most wanted men in the Southwest, he knew all too well the dusty trails, the bitter cattle feuds, the desperate killers, and the quiet, weather-beaten, wind-blasted towns that could explode into action with the wrong word. Follow Bowdrie's adventures in six classic westerns by America's favorite storyteller, Louis L'Amour.

Best sound effects.
Revisado: 08-17-24
The stories are fun classics. They have their own style and characters, but follow the standard western tropes.
The short story format makes them perfect for every type if listening situation:
You can listen when doing other things because if you miss something you don't have to go back hours to get that story element.
Listen as you go to bed as they're short enough to get in a whole story, or if you fell asleep it's easy to pick up where you left off.
You can listen with full focused attention on a long trip, or just because you like stories. There is 4-5 hours of audio time, and the stories pull you in and move at a good pace.
The best thing about these stories is their production quality. Unlike too many audio companies the multiple actors and sound affects don't clash. You can always clearly hear who's speaking. The music blends in seamlessly, and the practical affects help build the world in the head.
Really wish other companies would learn these lessons for their "movie in your mind" products.

Still goes no where till the very end.
Revisado: 06-04-24
Typical boot camp story, which is boring. No universe building or character development. She's tough and a good marine/fighter, but she's always been so. This story doesn't develop or push her story forward at all.
Only at the end do we get hints at whats to come and who may be pulling strings. All the rest is book filler.
Narrator still pronounced many words different from the main GE storyline books. Otherwise did okay for the character they're speaking for.

The daughter of a Legion war hero, fighting was in Andien Broxin's blood. But the battles Republic marines face on strange and alien worlds are a far cry from the vaunted, brutal, no-holds-barred conflicts fought at the edge of the galaxy by the elite legionnaires. Until a devastating war erupts right in the Republic’s stellar backyard. Newly stationed on a mid-core planet being harassed by terrorist revolutionaries, Andien and her fellow “hullbusters” find themselves right in the middle of a desperate fight for survival.

Meh... not needed.
Revisado: 06-02-24
It's a prequel about a side character, and doesn't even go into the parts of her background I wanted to know more about.
Absolutely no point to this story other than she'll start Legion selection at the end. That may have been worth it if this was the start of a series, but it's a PREQUEL. We already know she tried for legion and doesn't really make it.
The setting sticks to GE but is humans fighting humans, told from a marines perspective. Which is to say, too much like modern times, but use a sci-fi word in place of a normal one here or there.
As mentioned by others the narrator can read okay, but mispronounced several words which was irritating.
If the next book actually deals with her getting into nether ops it might be worth it, but this one isn't.

Wild wacky fun. Nice collection of short humorous stories with loads of pop culture references.
Would be great if Larry added little cameos of Tom Stranger into his other books in the background. Similar to how Brandon Sanderson has Hoid in the background of many of his books.

Our greatest rival is falling—now is the time to strike while they’re weak! Legion Varus is deployed to Jungle World, a vital planet deep in Rigellian territory. Our foes, fighting on two fronts, are driven back with ease. But one man questions the wisdom of this move. Should Earth expand with greed, aiding new monsters from the Galactic Rim? Revisado: 01-10-24
If you're still here for this book then you're the basic audience for this book and will be happy. It's the same formula as the others. James fumbles about seeking basic animal wants until it's time to fight and survive. Then he kills with the best of them and BS's his way through the politicking.
While the main story is progressed a bit nothing else changes too much. It's still my go to series for a light hearted simple action sci-fi story. It's the junk food off the genre, spending too much time here will make you sick, but coming back every once in a while is always enjoyable.

Fun little heist romp.
Revisado: 12-28-23
Nothing that hasn't been done before, but done well never the lest. Various groups decide to do some looting, while fighting alien invaders, and Mr. Murphy steps it to add some flavor.
This seems to be one of the offshoot stories. It introduces new characters who expand the scope and world of this franchise, but not the overall storyline. It could be called filler by some but I wouldn't agree. The creators have stated before they want to build the universe for future products such as games. For that, it needs a bigger fleshed out setting then you get following a small group, as they go through the main storyline.
Regardless I enjoyed most of the characters, and found their motivations reasonable for the situations. The story is well paced and straight forward.
The narrator is doing fine though I wouldn't mind getting a different one for the books that aren't about the initial main characters. In my head the world has everyone with the same 6 or 7 voices. If they want a bigger world more narrators would help.

Like fantasy, can't understand the hype over this series.
Revisado: 12-21-23
I liked the movies, but was never ecstatic about them. Fanatic fans kept telling me the books were much better. Sure, I tell myself most the time the actual book is better. So finally I get the audio book. Utter disappointment, in fact the movies were far superior.
While not a horrible book in the genre, it fails more than achieves.
1. No character arc. Every character is what they start as, and end the book in the same spot. The story is about static characters moving through the world. They act as they'll always act when ever X, Y, Z, etc... variable is tossed at them.
2. Stupid magic system. Magic is get out of jail free card... except when the author wants a story plot point to happen. Then magic can't or just won't be used. No explanation for or against.
3. Stupid weak villains. Every encounter with ring wraiths or Orcs are easily overcome. Ring wraiths are suppose to be very powerful I'm told yet they barely manage to injure a single hobbit the entire time.
Orcs die to everyone so why are people in middle earth worried about them? In the battle in Moria I believe hobbits defeated Orcs essentially 1 on 1 or maybe 2 on 1. Mind you the hobbits are farmers who never trained with weapons their entire lives.
Yes I know the author writes the dark forces are powerful and a severe threat, but it is never shown as such.
4. Too much detail on pointless junk, no detail of actual action. Like Wheel of Time, there are pages of descriptions on grass, trees, sound of the wind, etc... would be fine if any of it pertained to the plot. When we get to actual actions or battle -> no detail. Pretty much goes like "Orcs broke in and attacked the party they fought back until 5 orcs died and they retreated..." end battle scene, now... lets sing another 5 pages of a pointless song and say a boring 2 page poem.
5. This is a epic fantasy not a musical! Too many dumb songs and poems. People don't break into song during a normal conversation or just out of the blue. It's emersion breaking nearly every time a character does. The only time it made sense was for Tom Bombadil, as it was part of his character. I'm so glad most of the singing was kept out of the movies.
Those are the main story elements that bothered me about the book. Were it not the Lord of the Rings I'm sure most other fantasy readers would agree in some if not all, but woe on to thee who may question the God genius of Tolkien to his fanatic followers.
Also the narrator was kinda bad. He repeatedly messed up the voices he gave certain characters, and or flip flop the voices between characters on many occasions. Got to the point I had to rewind at times to understand who said what.
