traumatic history told from the child inside
Revisado: 09-04-22
I hadn't heard of Fred & Rose West, maybe I live under a rock, but a true crime YT-er mentioned this book and how great it was before discussing a different crime story in her video. Without reading details of the actual crimes I jumped to Audible and purchased this book. the way this book is written is really different (at least for me, maybe it's common in other true crime books). The author is one of the children who tells the history from her perspective, so I'd you don't know the crimes already you, like I have, will learn what is going on within your family along with the author.
It's heart breaking and angering and fascinating and yes I had to fast forward a couple times through parts I wasn't able to handle but it didn't hurt the overall story to do so. This story has aspects that you'd never think you'd be able to relate to, because we're talking about very horrific things that thank goodness DONT happen in everyone's life, but because it's the perspective of a child living and learning, it's relatable. The author and narrator did an amazing job at sharing the emotion and soul that is very tricky to put into true crime stories, and I am very proud of this author for sharing this story, her story! I'm sure it's helped victims feel normal, outsiders empathize rather than gawk and communities recognize signs in kids & families who need help.

Historia
A self-described orphan with parents, Bobby Hall began life as Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, the only child of an alcoholic, mentally ill mother on welfare and an absent, crack-addicted father. After enduring 17 years of abuse and neglect, Bobby ran away from home and - with nothing more than a discarded laptop and a ninth-grade education - he found his voice in the world of hip-hop and a new home in a place he never expected: the untamed and uncharted wilderness of the social media age. In the message boards and livestreams of this brave new world, Bobby became Logic.

Wine+TrevorNoah created an impulse buy that I LOVE
Revisado: 10-25-21
So I had zero idea of the name Bobby Hall when he was announced as a guest on the one random episode of Trevor Noah, which I am better awake to catch. Trevor was to be interviewing this person, related to his new book. I had caffeine too late and that was why my aging ass was awake, but I don't read (it's why we all have Audible ) so... but no couldn't change the channel bc the clicker was missing.
BEST SET OF MISTAKE COINCIDENCES !!!
This guy popped up on the screen with this genuine smile& Trev, the funniest smart man on TV with dimples that make darkness smile(just saying ) called this kid funny and a great read. My wine eventually said "yesss buy it"
I did
Growing up in MD his story reached me in a way that only someone who's escaped one of the black holes within the state, could be reached.
I laughed, I cried, I discovered this author's music career. I bought a couple for fellow friends who know what "boat" and "swoll" are and whose also escaped, and also know the next generation (should the be so lucky) of those we grew up with IF THEY'RE STILL ALIVE, would write about their parents.
I'm not from this guy's gen or town...but he could have been talking to my home town.
I also learned about his musical career only by pausing to look up what he was taking about. it was almost like an interactive novel but instead of me choosing the ending, I was learning & f'ing crying throughout. I am so happy I couldn't change the channel bc this is my favorite book for
ALL kids who grew up in MD (late 80s - today)
ALL humans who grew up anywhere who don't fit in,
ALL kids who were surrounded by mental illness, may fight it themselves & feel defined by either
ALL people who look at a young ass super star, especially those in retirement & wish it were you.

I couldn't stay hooked
Revisado: 02-25-21
There was nothing specifically stood out as unlikable for me, but I honestly had to fight to stay awake and get through this book! Maybe it's a positive review of the narrator's soothing voice, I just don't know. Because I fought my way to the end, I am rating it poorly, but again there wasn't anything specific about the story that I didn't like or truly dislike, other than the fact that it felt like a "have to" chore when I knew i had to listen to more before bookclub.

light mystery but a little overly thesaurus-y
Revisado: 01-05-21
I like to listen to light mysteries, especially during dark or stress filled days in real life. This fit the bill & was easy to follow, easy to imagine and easy to guess...or so I thought. I always think I'm right at what's about to happen next. I'm not taking about the BIG who dun it but every little step of the story. Little things like who will call when a phone rings, who made the floor creak in an otherwise empty house. I got some right in this book but most wrong, as usual. I did guess the BIG mystery's why in this story, very early on, but didn't tie it to the "who" of the story.
the one thing that got annoying is the repetitive use of words, and character reactions. For example, every single character has the same mannerisms. If you call out another character, no matter who it is, everyone always runs their tongue along their cheek and teeth, but when any character is annoyed they all "clack their tongue". Every character "waves their wrist" when they want to blow over a topic of discussion. I mean can you imagine being surrounded by a town of people constantly reacting with the same mannerisms?
The bit of the story i thought was "a little overly thesaurus-y" was the repeted use of words that aren't spoken in plain conversation. For example "quarrel" sure, it's a word but it was used by 30- something year old characters in their conversation.... over and over. To me that was both unrealistic conversation and because it was used so often it felt like the author did a <Ctrl>+<f> search for everywhere she uses "fight" or "argue" and replaced them all with "quarrel" . or didn't sound more sophisticated, it sounded more outdated & forced with the word choice combined with the repetition. A few of these "find and replace" type words tipped me to think more about the author than the story, thinking this is probably an older writer attempting to write conversational speech for much younger characters.
Anyway, if some repetitive use of aged words is the worst thing I can say, then it's proof that this is a good book. Plus, while I don't cook, there's a handful of recipes included throughout, as a little bonus for those who do like to cook.
