Honestly, I was rooting for the beast men. The protagonist is a sadistic brat who uses his cheat codes and answer keys to make people think he's a genius.

You really have to pay attention to follow the plot because it moves super fast and jumps from scene to scene with zero transition, zero tone adjustment, zero time gating. It didn't work for me because I listen while I work and I couldn't devote enough attention to keep up with the plot. But if you like fast paced, emotionally detached, erratic action, you might love this adventure.

S-Tier Female Narration

For the rest of the series, please let Hannah do all the narration with Giancarlo doing only the male dialog. She's a literal virtuoso. Click "Helpful" if you agree.

This author's secret sauce is his to ability dial down the inherent cringe factor of the genre with believable lifelike character interactions. It's a magic trick to make this guilty fun accessible to cringe sensitive listeners. The voice and performance of the female narrator is crucial to selling the magic trick. Male narration of erotic scenes just doesn't work as well.

Push through the disorienting beginning until you catch the main thread; from that point on, the pacing is swift and masterful: always building momentum, always raising the stakes, always deepening the reader's investment.

Fast forward mode enabled

Really fast pace, especially for a prequel. Say focused while you listen because if you take your headset off for three seconds, you could miss an entire battle, love scene, or interplanetary journey.
This book doesn’t feel like a normal prequel. It’s a well rounded, self-contained story. It doesn’t weigh you down with background info only relevant to existing series fans. It doesn’t frustrate you with the generation of a bunch of unresolved threads.

Big Narration Upgrade

Michael Kramer's narration doesn't capture the weight of what he's reading. He sounds kind of apathetic. Rosamund Pike is much better at rendering the glory and gravity the story deserves. I wish the rest of the series was available from this masterful narrator.

Diva Fantasy

Creative story concept. The most compelling aspect for me was the initial mystery which kept me guessing all the way through.

The ideal audience for this story is a romance reader who can channel her inner diva and indulge in a fantasy of pampering and excess while the world falls apart around her. If you read the story from any other perspective, you end up disliking the self-centered, manipulative protagonist. Liam's devotion didn't seem merited. I struggled to identify with him. Maybe future books in the series solve this problem.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy readers probably want to skip. The superpower/apocalypse elements are more setting than feature and suffer from distracting holes.

Found this title by following Alex Ford. Her narration carried me through a story that was a poor fit for me.

Little action, little excitement, lots of beverages served; somehow my interest was glued the entire duration. Fantasy readers who are used to having their nerves strung out by rollercoaster plots and catastrophic stakes might enjoy this restful read that feels as good as a hot cup of tea.
