Historia
In a family torn apart by poverty and violence, Hekat is no more than an unwanted mouth to feed, worth only a few coins from a passing slave trader. But Hekat was not born to be a slave. For her, a different path has been chosen. It is a path that will take her from stinking back alleys to the house of her God, from blood-drenched battlefields to the glittering palaces of Mijak. This is the story of Hekat, slave to no man.

Unique setting and characters
Revisado: 07-06-23
This had me debating if a person can be made insane through traumatic events in life, or are some people born that way, and then thrust in traumatic situations, to which their mental state gives them an advantage? Anyway, this book makes you feel like you are in a place like Afghanistan, pure hot desolation....then add sticky hot blood, some being consumed.....that is only the setting. The characters are vivid and deep and change over time. The writing is an exceptional display of craft, brought forth by the narrator, who reads with passion and many different voices. the beginning of this book alone set the tone for the realness that was to come. I recommend not only this book, but the entire series.

Historia
Ethrea is an island in the center of the most important shipping route in the world. For 400 years, it has been a land of peace and impregnable security, a perfect trading hub - and keeper of secrets. The King of Ethrea is dying. His only surviving heir is the princess Rhian. But if her enemies have their way, Ethrea will not be ruled by a woman. Dexterity Jones is a toymaker. To protect Princess Rhian and his country, he must place his trust in an exile from Mijak. Yet as Ethrea comes ever closer to civil war, a greater danger awaits.

WOW.

This was a nice way to change the story up from the first book. One thing I like about Karen's writing is that she left the race of the people of Mijak mostly ambiguous, at least in my opinion, in the first book; she focused on it in this second book, which gave her writing a true western perspective. Besides a great story and cliff hanger ending, I thought the mechanisms she used to tell the story from a western lense were masterful.
