Historia
Julian Langham was poised on the brink of a dazzling career when the lawyers lured him into making a catastrophic mistake. Now, instead of the concert platform, he has a title he doesn’t want, an estate verging on bankruptcy...and bewildering responsibilities for which he is totally unfitted. And yet the wreckage of Julian’s life is not a completely ill wind. For Tom, Rob, and Ellie it brings something that is almost a miracle...if they dare believe in it.

What an Excellent Story!
Revisado: 04-30-25
Have read and reread all Stella Riley’s books - Have listened an listened again and again with all the formidable Alex Wyndham’s voices.
Four years ago I fell over “The Parfit Knight”. Since then I have become a fan. Have always loved reading historical romance Ms. Riley is in my opinion the Master of our day in this genre.
Thank you with all my heart!

Historia
Based on a story she had written for her brother and published when she was 19 years old, The Black Moth is set during the Georgian era in the 1750s and follows Lord Jack Carstares, the eldest son of the Earl of Wyncham. Six years ago, Jack took the blame when his younger brother Richard cheated at cards. Jack consequently faced social exile and fled England for the European continent. He has now secretly returned, robbing carriages as a highwayman.

An excellent match…
Revisado: 12-16-24
…between the story and the performance.
In all honesty it took a couple of chapters for me to “get into” the rhythm of the story, but I came to love it more and more. Mrs Heyer knew how to juggle many characters and each of their own storyline. Storylines that would melt together into satisfying new beginnings.
And then of course there are the lively and very real dialogues that here and there brings a smile to one’s face.

Historia
Lady Anne Deveril doesn’t spook easily. A woman of lofty social standing known for her glacial beauty and starchy opinions, she’s the unofficial leader of her small group of equestriennes. Since her mother’s devastating plunge into mourning six years ago, Anne voluntarily renounced any fanciful notions of love and marriage. And yet, when fate puts Anne back into the entirely too enticing path of Mr. Felix Hartford, she’s tempted to run…right into his arms.

A Real and Captivating Story
Revisado: 02-10-24
There is such a lively and real setting in this Victorian love story of Ann and Felix, and also in the obstacles of how to bridge the old world of the upper class with the new world and the “commoners” in trade of the industrialisation in the second half of the 19th century. That is precisely where we meet our two lovers. An exciting time in history to be sure, which Felix has embraced in his need/want to survive his immense heartbreak 6+ years earlier. He has developed a formidable patience through his trials juggling family, heart and a risky economical survival, which makes him the most interesting character in this story.
He truly becomes a quite humble “saviour” in perfect timing with Ann and her dominant mother’s forced life changing situation.
So far the most heartfelt of the three “Belles of London” novels (everyone of them great reads in their own right) - but also the story with the most annoying mother and daughter relation which of course is absolutely necessary to understand the actions of our intelligent, beautiful and struggling for balance heroine in a life situation with very few choices.
I’ll definitely read/listen to it again.
The performances of both Ann and Felix were perfect to my ears!
Now it shall be a looong wait for Stella and Teddy’s Story…

Sowerby, England, 1802. Miss Genevieve Wilde—a magistrate’s daughter and independent heiress—is determined to meet life’s challenges all on her own, just as her late-father had taught her. Upon reading an advertisement in the paper, she takes a chance and contacts a thief-taker to find the watch. It’s a choice Ginny regrets when former Bow Street officer Jack Travers arrives on her doorstep.

An Entertaining Surprise
Revisado: 01-06-24
With notes leading thought in the direction of Michelle Griep’ Bowstreet Runners Trilogy - a great listen - adorable and honest and devastatingly attractive Jack Travers. Story held me captured all the way through due to the high quality performance. I really liked Genevieve Wild and also her colourful friend Beatrice (am curious about Beatrice and if there is a love story for her?).
A feel good read.

She wanted sanctuary... Helena Reynolds will do anything to escape her life in London, even if that means traveling to a remote cliffside estate on the North Devon coast and marrying a complete stranger. But Greyfriar's Abbey isn't the sort of refuge she imagined. And ex-army captain Justin Thornhill - though he may be tall, dark, and devastatingly handsome - is anything but a romantic hero. He needed redemption... Justin has spent the last two decades making his fortune, settling scores, and suffering a prolonged period of torture in an Indian prison.

Love … Parish Orphans of Devon
Revisado: 11-01-23
Have read and reread all four books with both eyes and ears.
I really like Justine Eyre performing.
But I love Alex Wyndham’s performances. First I found Wyndham’ style a bit overwhelming, but I did not give up, and now, as with much excellent music… his style has grown on me… and I now search for books of my liking A. W. has recorded.
Mimi Matthew is such an excellent storyteller and in such a wholesome way. Everything about this book is perfect. The setting, the theme, the love story as compelling as Mr.
Darcy and Elisabeth Bennett’s.
It’s a keeper!

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Thank God …
Revisado: 05-11-23
… that modern day writers are not shy to let their characters speak of God, and how the soothing influence faith in Christ can have on a person’s heart.
Interesting storyline with a heroine struggling with dyslexia.
Not too happy about the narration though.

My First Cathy Maxwell Reading Experiences
Revisado: 05-05-23
Have me positively surprised. The story of Ann and Aidan kept me entertained and curious all the way through. A “pageturner” read efficiently and in a matter of fact tone that I personally am quite attracted to. Also Ms Leishman’s language/subtle but distinct changes in voice and dialect add personality to the characters inhibiting the universe of Ms Maxwell’s storytelling. Thanx!

Whilst accompanying Nell to what he speedily comes to regard as the house-party from hell, he meets Adeline Kendrick - acid-tongued, no more than passably good-looking yet somehow alluring. Worse still, her relatives are quite deplorable - from a spoiled, ill-natured cousin to a sadistic, manipulative uncle.

A Breathtaking…
Revisado: 11-25-22
… ly beautifully love story slowly developing within a tale of family woe, heart ache and great friendship. If you love real life historical romance taking place in upper classes of society, and if you love the romance to be imbedded in a gallery of real living, thinking, and feeling humans THIS IS A BOOK FOR YOU. Stella Riley is almost inhuman in her understanding and interpretation of relationships, and how those relations either are or do become intertwined in ways that simply mesmerise the reader.
Alex Wyndham is simply perfect!
