Historia
Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. His mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet, left without a trace when he was nine years old. He doesn’t know what happened to her—only that her books have been banned—and he resents that she cared more about her work than about him.

Insufferable narration and an update
Revisado: 03-29-23
I’m actually writing this review at about 1/3 of the way through so the story might flesh out. I’ll finish the story in book form. The narration is insufferable. Perfect for a storyteller in the library reading a scary book to kindergartners. I just couldn’t listen any more. What a shame. Save your money/credits; get something else as long as Lucy Liu isn’t narrating.
An update: The book was splendid and I’m glad I finished it. Mostly reading though because while the narration was not good, the second half was better than the first.

The narration ruined this for me
Revisado: 06-25-22
I bought this as a Kindle book as well as the audiobook but the narration was painful. I can’t put my finger on whether it was because of the narrator’s over-the-top elocution or that she was reading the book like she was reading to the fourth grade. In any event, the audiobook went back. I’ll finish the story on my Kindle. The story was interesting and I’m looking forward to seeing how it all wraps up.

Historia
Corbin College, not quite upstate New York, winter 1959-1960: Ruben Blum, a Jewish historian—but not an historian of the Jews—is co-opted onto a hiring committee to review the application of an exiled Israeli scholar specializing in the Spanish Inquisition. When Benzion Netanyahu shows up for an interview, family unexpectedly in tow, Blum plays the reluctant host to guests who proceed to lay waste to his American complacencies. Mixing fiction with nonfiction, the campus novel with the lecture, The Netanyahus is a wildly inventive comedy of blending, identity, and politics.

Boring, boring, boring
Revisado: 06-08-22
I'm not a quitter but I got 47% in and needed to stop. I found that I was just dreading this book. Don't get me wrong, it was beautifully written and some of the scenes were amusing but I just didn't care about the characters. And the 30 page long diatribes on the Jewish condition were difficult to plod through. This book might be for some people but sadly, not for me.

Calamity after tragedy after hardship
Revisado: 03-19-22
Just too much. It was as if the author wanted to write about a breathtakingly disfunctional family so she threw everything but the kitchen sink at it. The sisters were whiny and angry at the wrong people, picking unnecessary and unbelievable fights at every turn. Their lives were at once privileged and tragic and everyone was running around with their hair on fire all the time. The family emigrated from India and had enough money to send one daughter to Stanford, one daughter marries an extremely wealthy man and the third daughter took three pictures on vacation after graduation and became a National Geographic photographer. I disliked them all, got frustrated and skipped from the middle to the end just to finish. Waste of time but not bad enough to return.

The narration killed the story
Revisado: 07-31-21
This was an acceptable, average story but the narration was painful. The narrator for Nella sounded like she was suicidal and the narrator for Caroline had an English accent bordered on insulting. All of this was a distraction in the extreme and, considering the story was average at best, I’d save my credit for something more satisfying.

When that dream crashed, she turned to stealing from rich kids in LA alongside her wily Irish boyfriend, Lachlan. Good entertainment
Revisado: 06-29-21
This book was a well written yarn with pretty interesting characters. I had a lot of fun with this story and it holds up well as a Kindle book so Whispersync was how I experienced the story. The narration was good and for me, that means not intrusive. Even though there are three narrators, they all blended well but whoever narrated Michael could have done a better job with the Irish accent.

A bit too much of a love story for my taste
Revisado: 06-29-21
There narration was fine but I wish I had known that this was romance novel before I started. Not my favorite genre and I wouldn't have bought the audiobook. Having said that, the characters were uneven and there were gaping holes in the storyline. Waste of a credit for me.

Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Awful narration
Revisado: 06-29-21
I’ve seen the Netflix series and knew and liked the story. I’m not an Audible newbie, I’ve got a library of almost 400 audiobooks but the narration for this story was unbearable. I listened for an hour and gave up. So bad. A shame bc the story is great.

I. JUST. COULDN’T. FINISH
Revisado: 02-15-21
I like Barack Obama, a lot, so I was looking forward to listening to him describe his presidency. His voice is easy to listen to, he obviously is comfortable with the material, but the whole book was WAY TOO LONG. I actually dropped off at around 550 pages so I did the work. I may go back to finish bc I really want to hear about Sadam Hussein but I just needed to go away for a while. Sorry, Mr. President, especially in the current climate, your true desire to do the right thing, even when unpopular, was refreshing but can you shave off 1/3 of the book?

Historia
Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

Narration of Alina's part grated on my nerves
Revisado: 07-13-20
I liked the story and will continue reading but I couldn't listen to Alina for one more second. Her Polish accent was incorrect and so annoying. Why do narrators feel the need to speak English with an accent? Obviously, Polish people don't speak English with a Polish accent! The writing was mediocre but the story, while somewhat predictable, was entertaining enough. If you don't mind the ridiculous accent for Alina, go for it.
