McBain is boring

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 12-15-05

I've been a McBain fan since he started, literally. The 87th P books have gotten so formulated that they are beyond saving. The story is weak, the reader's effeminate style is incompatible with a police procedural, and I could not wait until it was over.

Audio Version Far Superior

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 09-05-05

I had difficulty reading the print version of this novel. I don't know why; perhaps keeping track of all the characters was the reason. I downloaded the audio version and absolutely loved it. The readers brought this book to life (or at least undead) and I couldn't turn it off. This book is well worth it and an outstanding listen. Masterful!

Not a Jersey Girl any more

Total
1 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 07-24-05

I love Stephanie Plum...that is until I listened to this version. It ruined all my illusions and imaginings. First off, the reader simply doesn't do justice to the sasssy, brassy Jersey Girl of the previous books. I should have just read the book. But then, I'd be disappointed by the story which is nothing more than more of the same meandering, unconnected ramblings of a woman who simply cannot grow at all. One would expect an adult, even a Jersey Girl, to learn something and grow, even a little bit, from novel to novel. But alas, Stephanie is doomed to be less than she should be. The reader doesn't do justice to any of the other characters, especially Ranger and Grandma. This version ruined Evanovich for me forever, I'm afraid. If you are a real Plum fan, please don't buy this version. Read the book. At least you have a chance.

I loved it. Well read, good story, paced will, and I was kind of sad when it was all over.

I enjoyed it. The scenes in Italy were very real. The story wes read well and it helped a lot. The story sort of disintegrates at the end.

Exciting and predictable

Well read which helped a lot. Patterson is running out of steam. Time to get a new hero or something. Not up to his previous thrillers.

Fair story, wrong reader

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 03-30-05

I've read or listened to every one of Parker's books. I'm a fan. But he's in a rut. The same converstations and observations between Spenser and Hawk. The same characters. The same basic plot. Actually, I can live with all that but Joe Montagne is absolutely the wrong guy to read this kind of book. He sounds like a nerdy English professor trying to play the role of a tough guy. His attempts to change his voice to be Hawk are painful to listen to. It's like a white minstral player trying to do blackface and it is just not well done. It was bad enough when he played the part in a movie, with his scrawny arms and small stature, but his voice is even weaker and wussy. Buy the book instead.

Fascinating and funny

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 01-07-05

Wolfe's work is normally uneven and one always takes a chance with him. Charlotte Simmons is addictive, funny and a bit disturbing. His proses is wonderful and his observations are lethal. Way too much has been made of the sex in the book. If anything, it's an interruption, but nothing more. Much of the story isn't much different than college was in the 50's-60's when I attended. We always had our sex hounds, nerds, jocks and such. This is almost like a teen romance novel on grass (or beer) and one wonders what kind of nerd Wolfe was. I sustpect he's getting some of his frustrations worked out here. The reader is absolutely superb and he makes it worth the ride. If I were reading this thing, I'd have given up after about 100 pages.

The best way to read this book

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 07-10-04

Political bios are best listened to than read. Clinton's book was most interesting and, I thought, honest. In his words, "interesting and self-serving." I would have gladly listened to an unabridged version because I find his insights useful and fun. I've grown to like him and respect him and his book helps make the case. His understanding of world politics is superb and so refreshing when one compares him to his replacement.

Clinton matures

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-19-04

Clinton seems to have gotten a bit more balanced, offering a balanced view of things. It appears this book will not resort to cheap rebuttal and revenge, but will provide a balanced perspective of his life and things that influenced him, his presidency taken as a whole, and will not blast the current administration with cheap political rhetoric. He is a thoughtful man who continues to learn as his life progresses and he doesn't profess to know it all. I respect him and will read/listen to his book.
