I love GraphicAudio, but this seemed phoned in.

I enjoy the Kate Daniels series, and I love the Graphic Audio books, but this one didn't seem like they were really into giving the performance.
Nothing like the rest of the Graphic Audio books for this series.

Two simple examples:
1) Kate's voice when she is near to death in the hospital is barely different than how she is normally. This is supposed to be a pivotal scene, but it plays like nothing special. And then when she is supposed to have a flat, emotionless voice... well, it isn't.

2) A fight and climatic scene at the end is just sort of blah. again, not given the weight it's supposed to have.

These are just two examples... there are plenty more. but basically for these two scenes, the regular audio book and narrator gives them much, much more feeling. Pretty much the same with the rest of the book.

In short story collections, the chapter selections should really have the story title listed.
Possibly even the author (or in this case, the country of origin for the story). I like having the narrator listed, too...... But -- at least have the story title listed and not just: 1, 2, 3, etc. Especially when there's 33 of them.

This new part was great. To me, it didn't seem to have any filler... just a good story. I'm definitely looking forward to the next season.</br>

The only part I had an issue with is that, although it didn't happen often, there were a few times where the background sound effects washed out the dialogue.
As I said, it didn't happen often, but it did happen several times, and I'm surprised nothing got changed during the production.
I sort of feel like if they play dialogue we're supposed to hear, we should be able to hear it.

Is it Plot driven? Character driven? Inconsistent.

The first book had a lot going for it with the way the characters were themselves and this helped push the story along.
In this book, the character's personalities shown through every now and then, but mostly it felt like whoever was in a scene was given whatever personality in order to feed to plot, even if it didn't make sense.
Compared to the first book, they felt rather watered down.
•••• Two things that were more frustrating than others.
FIRST .. One of the good guy main characters is supposed to be a super-duper dualist when it comes to honor duels. But he's supposed to try and make sure he doesn't get sucked into a duel. Yet he, his handlers, his closest friends, spend almost nine hours trying to figure out how the proverbial bad guy is going to force him into having to accept an honor duel. None of them can figure it out. They are supposed to be tactical geniuses, yet the most obvious tactic somehow eludes them.
SECOND .. Just as in the first book, their ship is supposed to be super fast super nimble super quick super slick. Yet just about every single time they head into the air there is a reason they simply have to fly slower and with less endurance than hulking ships made out of metal that are roughly the size of a small city. I assume there's a trope for that, but it's really annoying.

I definitely wish there were more books by this author.
This book was fun. It was absolutely enjoyable, and a joy to listen to. No, it wasn't super deep, and it wasn't something that will leave you puzzling over the nuances for years after you read it.
But it's humor and often self-deprecating style was perfect for giving me a smile when I really needed one.
Many thanks!

Really just wanted to throw my five stars up there. But, they hit on a number of things that were funny in retrospect, and it was easy to tell they had a good time making this one.

The narration was crisp; the sound mixing was well done, and the story didn't try to push itself too far too fast.

I'm really hoping for more of this.

The FMC can't walk if not holding any male's hand

The FMC started off strong. She took walks or runs through the forest at night, despite severe penalties if she got caught.
She learned how to defend herself and use weapons. She even believed and knew her body belonged to her and no one else. It was good to read.

Yet, after the plot starts up in chapter 6, she now seems completely unable to run without her hand in her brother's hand, or in a companion's she just met, despite that doing so would slow both of them down.

Also, she apparently can't get up or down without a male giving her his hand that she has to take, except when she's fighting and winning. But after that, she again can't seem to function without a male holding her hand.

The first time she shares a meal with a stranger, she's even somehow forgotten that she's been feeding herself since she was a toddler, and the stranger has to put each piece of food in her mouth in order for her to be able to eat! This is someone she doesn't know, yet she's being fed like a child.

And her brother gives her a knife that is absolutely only to be used to kill herself instead of being taken alive, but when she asks her brother why, he just tells her that there are things she shouldn't know and that ignorance is better.

Seriously? She's told to kill herself because it's simply the best thing to do, but given no actual reasons to back it up, and she's content to continue traveling with her brother?
He knows things about her or her situation that are so serious that she's supposed to kill herself, but he won't tell her what these things are and she's just okay with this?

And she seems fine with that.

Way to go on getting this published.

I liked this book for its different approach to a game, and I'm sorry that he passed and wasn't able to continue with this series.

Whereas we're sorry he couldn't continue with his series, thanks for giving us this gift.
