The best
Revisado: 11-26-22
I don’t live in the UK but turned to their news and podcasts to hear about someone else’s terrible politics. I don’t know who some of these people even are but Marina’s takes are so great it doesn’t matter. Thank you for reminding us that there is looniness everywhere. Highly recommend.

Best sci fi I’ve read in years
Revisado: 02-11-20
I got this book from the library and was instantly hooked. I loved the explorations of the possible evolution of language, learning, and cultural developments in another species as well as the parallel story of humans coping with the potential end of humanity. It all came together so beautifully. A week after reading the book I knew I had to hear it as well. There was so much to absorb. Highly recommended!

Historia
The Two Towers is the second volume of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic saga, The Lord of the Rings. The Fellowship has been forced to split up. Frodo and Sam must continue alone towards Mount Doom, where the One Ring must be destroyed. Meanwhile, at Helm’s Deep and Isengard, the first great battles of the War of the Ring take shape. In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien’s great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe - hobbits, elves, and wizards - spring to life. Rob Inglis’ narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

Still amazing
Revisado: 11-26-19
I’ve loved these books since I was a wee lad. I bought the audio version to kill time while training for a backpacking trip and found the experience much more gratifying than expected. Reading the books was always fun but audio gives an unexpected newness to the material. I loved them all over again.

Interesting concept
Revisado: 04-12-17
I really liked the premise and the clever way he shifts things to keep what could be tedious (he's starting over again??) and makes it interesting and, sort of, believable. My beef with the book was everything else. The descriptions of everyday activities were kind of tedious. I found myself saying, "Who cares? Just get on with it!", far too often. And don't get me started on the cringeworthy sex talk. Yikes!
But I found myself thinking about the possibilities and wondering what I would do differently if it happened to me. And wondering what, maybe, I SHOULD do differently now. That's worth something.
Allowing for its age, one and a half thumbs up.

Historia
Harry August is on his deathbed. Again. No matter what he does or the decisions he makes, when death comes, Harry always returns to where he began, a child with all the knowledge of a life he has already lived a dozen times before. Nothing ever changes. Until now. As Harry nears the end of his 11th life, a little girl appears at his bedside. "I nearly missed you, Doctor August", she says. "I need to send a message". This is the story of what Harry does next, and what he did before, and how he tries to save a past he cannot change and a future he cannot allow.

Took patience but loved it by the end.
Revisado: 04-02-17
I have admit I almost gave up on this one. It was a bit rugged with more than one needlessly detailed descriptions of torture. The performance overall was quite good with clear differences in characters. I found the voice of Vincent early in the narrative pretty annoying in pitch and insistence but he settled down as things got rolling.
The story begins picking up about halfway through and ends with a bang, an ending one sort of intuits but the details of which pleasantly surprised me.
I'd definitely recommend it!

Revisado: 02-24-16
One of my favorite Audible books! A wide-ranging series of articles covering all manor of characters, from the merely goofy to the seriously frightening. Ronson's ability to find the humanity in his each of his subjects is what makes these so interesting. And his unique voice keeps you right there. My wish list is now full of Jon Ronson.

A very engaging listen!
Revisado: 04-27-15
Would you consider the audio edition of The Girl on the Train to be better than the print version?
I didn't read the print edition but found the audio version very well done. I couldn't wait to get back in my truck to listen.
What did you like best about this story?
It was funny, the parts that got me most involved were the ones where I was most peeved at the characters. I would literally slap my forehead saying, "You lunatic, don't do that!" But the story was so compelling I couldn't stop listening.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I could have, but the cross country trip I took wasn't long enough to finish it!
Any additional comments?
Gotta love those British accents.

When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up.

Loved it!
Revisado: 12-25-14
What made the experience of listening to The Girl with All the Gifts the most enjoyable?
The narration and voicing was excellent and the story itself never let go.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Each character had their own attraction and, at times, annoying behaviors. My favorite "character" though was the main focus of the book, the cause of what occurred. I loved the author's twist on how things came to be and the plausibility.
What does Finty Williams bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She's excellent at giving voice to each character and, of course, her accent. Besides being just mesmerizing to my middle-America ears, it fit the setting of the story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Melanie was in a particularly bad situation but had no concept of what was happening and didn't really realize her danger - just the innocence and lack of guile in that moment was both touching and frightening.
Any additional comments?
The ending completely took me by surprise. But I loved it!

Annoying characters
Revisado: 11-17-13
What did you like best about The Circle? What did you like least?
The book had an intriguing concept but the main characters were annoying, self-centered, whiners. The sex scenes were so awful they made me never want to think about sex again. Even the so-called Wise One who was supposed to be fighting the good fight seemed to only appear when he wanted a quick bang in the women's room. Ick.
How could the performance have been better?
The voicing was distracting, brought attention to itself, and kept taking me out of the story. Men character's voices were lowered and slowed down and each one sounded like a doofus. Women's were ok but jarring coming out of male reader's mouth. I would have preferred a straight reading, frankly.
