Parlor manages to keep the reader engaged nearly every moment of his storylines. For anyone with an appreciation of military venue, this is the author!

It is for the most part a drawn out epilogue of “computer speak”
With a few sentient events which leave the reader expecting, but never quite getting the “more” one would expect. I will give it this, it did manage to get me through to the very unsatisfactory ending with the tantalizing notion that, in the end it will all work out fine, which it most decidedly does not.

Having read this series of novels from the beginning, I wondered if BC could ever come up with a fitting end. Well... he did. The final tale of Utred certainly fulfills the epic saga of the Saxon chronicles. Very well done! 👍

Aside from being of very short duration for an Audiobook, the context was "common sense boring", with elaborations about terrain and tactics, which are archaic and anachronistic. While one can appreciate that it may have been the war college of its time, that time is long gone and while some of its strategies are in fact universal, most of these are governed by practical logic. Don't feel that I got my audible book's worth out of this one and am moderately surprised that it was ranked so highly. The narrator was good, but the plot lets down.

Lord Hornblower is good, but not great when contrasted with the other books of this genre. I found it difficult to reconcile this version of Hornblower with the faithful character of previous novels. This novel seems to be a study of his frailties and is at times bordering on something non of the other books were in the slightest....slightly boring.

Listened to this entire book, kept waiting for it to take off. I found the plot difficult to follow, with lots of characters the reader really does not get to know very well. Action adventure was minimized and historical detail emphasized to the point of boredom. When one is used to the likes of B.Cornwell or Angus McDonald, this book is a bit of a disappointment. Narrator did well with it.

Overall , I have deepy enjoyed Bernard Cornwall's books. I believe that I have read or listened to every single obe, from all of thr Sharps series to the Saxon Chronicles, the Archer series and individual books like Stonehenge and Waterloo. Perhaps I just missed it in the past, but I've never fully appreciated the vituperation this author seems to have towards Christians. At least 1st millenium Christians. I must thinkbthat if the majority of christians were as bad as portrayed in the Arthur series, the religion could never have survived. It was confusing to me how at first the lead character, Dervil, had actually become a christian, devouted to the message of Christ. However, he doesn'ylt seem to wind up That way. So many disparaging plots about christians. Perpetuating the myth that Mithras lived a parallel life to Christ, when in fact that theory is itself cloaked in stipled mythology. Although the story is told with customary literary excellence, common to all of Cornwell's novels, it revealed a deep and insideous intolerance of christians, despite the few "good chris's, like Galahad etc...". At one point, this theme just seemed to permeate the story so much that it took away from the essence of the plot. For the first time, I had to admit a deep disappointment in one of Cornwell's series.

While the prose is lyrical, the story line tends to be a bit quagmired. The author introduces so many characters so quickly, it is hard to keep track of who is who. The first third of the book was something of a trial for me to stay focused on. However, things do pick up as the plot progresses. I tended to get a bit drawn away by the constant beating up on christians, and this left me musing on how the protagonist eventually becomes a christian, albeit, one aparently persecuted by other christians. En toto, there seems to be a strong anti- christian theme running through the book.
The battle vignettes are well done, as is usual for Bernard Cornwell. One is transported back in time to an era which has very little recorded history with which to refer, yet as always, Cornwell makes the reader feel as if you could reach out and smell ancient times and places. While not up to par with his other books ( ie The Saxon Chronicles), tgis series does deliver. It just takes a bit of time and patience to vet there.

I really enjoyed Outlaw, although at times it seemed to drag just a little. Not so for Holy Warrior! Every minute of this book, I found engaging, entertaining and historically informative. I usually listen to these Audiobooks while driving too/ from work. I found myself almost looking forward to my otherwise miserable commute, listening to this book. Well done Angus Donald!
