It’s boring

Wasted a credit

I truly wanted to like this story, but it did not deliver. It’s hard when you despise the main characters by the end of the story. They are the opposite of who you think they are — devious and opportunistic. The twists and turns were interesting, but implausible. One of the main characters ends up being accused of a crime they not only didn’t commit, but never actually happened. The police never treated the crime scene as protocol would have dictated…no fingerprints, no crime scene investigation, no gunshot powder residue, etc. I wish I hadn’t wasted a credit.

Definitely not a book for escapism

I expected so much better from this author. Too much detail about sadistic sexual tortures. The main character is too unfocused and difficult to care about. I skipped to the last few chapters of the book to see how it ended because I couldn’t bear to waste any more time on this book. Definitely would not recommend to anyone.

I got the book on Audible and could not stop listening! It’s wonderfully narrated and the stories are flawlessly intertwined, Dame Black’s writing makes me feel as though I know her personally, and I look forward to delving into more of her books!

What a mess

Lacking Emotion

The story was decent, but I feel that the characters didn’t have enough depth. The Widow showed very little emotion about her husband’s death. Rather than returning to their daughter’s side, she chose to stay and play detective. That choice is unnatural for a mother with a young daughter grieving the loss of her father. It would have served the story better had there been a period of mourning before the sleuthing. Also, I got a little lost with the switch to the backstory.
