A RARELY TOLD STORY
Revisado: 12-29-24
All concentration camp fiction/non-fiction concentrates on the Jews who of course were not the only people to be interned in Auschwitz and other camps. Since they were not immediately destined for extermination, political prisoners have a rather different story to tell. For anyone who has actually been to Auschwitz (in the days before it became a theme park and the ideal place to take a selfie and post on social media i.e; more than 20 years ago) the descriptions of Block 11 are indeed as harrowing as the book cover blurb promises. Not an easy read, but a very interesting one.

ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING
Revisado: 09-24-24
If you have a dog, then this is a MUST-LISTEN. I firmly believe that my cavalier is not the smartest dog on the block, but I'm rethinking my position since reading this. I shall be listening again, because I'm sure that I've missed a great deal. Wonderful, and even if you don't have a dog but just love animals, this is a fascinating way to spend a few hours.

Historia
For Stella Bled Lawrence, being wealthy and stylish in 1938 is exactly what it's cracked up to be. She's blissfully unaware of the rising tensions in Europe even as she travels to Vienna on the eve of the Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass. Stella and her husband, Nicky, witness the night's atrocities firsthand. Even as they watch the horror, they never imagine it will touch them personally, a pair of wealthy Americans on their honeymoon, but touch them it does.

OK BUT IT DEFINES FICTION
Revisado: 11-13-23
Fiction ...go to occupied Paris and est buttery croissants and have enough steak to put it on a black eye After you have jumped in a taxi, sat in a traffic jam and then slalomed through this same traffic. Totally unbelievable story full of the author's idealised idea of Europe and who cares if it is historically inaccurate. Writing this with 30 minutes to go but I shan't be listening to the next one despite the up in the air ending. The heroine is so unreal I couldn't give a fig. ...but then that is fiction!

Wonderful juste wonderful
Revisado: 11-03-23
brillant narration...a Scot speaking for a Scot...such a change from Americans trying to be all things to all men.
An insight into the daily lives of hospital doctors, brilliantly woven into well researched cameos of health care killers as the story gently unfolds to its surprising conclusion.
Everything about this book was totally believable. there were no contrivances used to advance the story. ... A thoroughly brilliant listen.

having Saïd that ...a wonderful debut novel...this author will get better with time. I know too much about France the French their history and Paris to have been totally taken in ... and of course the false french accents were jarring to MY nerves...but don't be put off by my very personal critique. you will enjoy this book I'm sure.

RATHER PREDICTABLE BUT WORTH A LISTEN
Revisado: 08-27-23
Yes, lots of predictable bits .. of COURSE he's not a nice guy, but you also want to shake the heroine for being so stupid, and there are some rather impossible bits to make her story move forward, but it kept me company while I walked the dog and did the washing up.

Revisado: 08-27-23
Mixed up ... not a great listen unless you are concentrating at 200% and doing nothing else ... Odd bits of story that have no rhyme or reason (unless I missed it while making a bed) ... I did NOT enjoy this and this is rare for me. I'm a good listener, but my opinion applies only to me.
