Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Fun In-Depth Examination of Victorian Life
Revisado: 12-31-18
This was an enjoyable look into the lives of the Victorians, a people who lived deeply secretive lives. Stephen Fry is, as always, an engaging narrator and the topics are fascinating, from crime to toilets to sex lives to explorations of death. Definite recommendation for the historian interested in digging into the literal nitty gritty.

Historia
What is fascism? By focusing on the concrete, what the fascists did rather than what they said, the esteemed historian Robert O. Paxton answers this question for the first time. From the first violent uniformed bands beating up "enemies of the state", through Mussolini's rise to power, to Germany's fascist radicalization in World War II, Paxton shows clearly why fascists came to power in some countries and not others.

Historia
As World War I drew to a close, change reverberated through the halls of England's country homes. As the sun set slowly on the British Empire, the shadows lengthened on the lawns of a thousand stately homes. In The Long Weekend, historian Adrian Tinniswood introduces us to the tumultuous, scandalous, and glamorous history of English country houses during the years between world wars.

Informational but a little dry at times
Revisado: 09-19-18
This snapshot of English country life, at times, demonstrates the wit and scandal fans of Gosford Park and Downton Abbey may expect. But at times it runs dry as a recitation of several example great houses emphasizing a point. When the book focuses on a single great estate or family it's at its strongest.

Historia
Nix's life began in Honolulu in 1868. Since then she has traveled to mythic Scandinavia, a land from the tales of One Thousand and One Nights, modern-day New York City, and many more places both real and imagined. As long as he has a map, Nix's father can sail his ship, the Temptation, to any place, any time. But now he's uncovered the one map he's always sought - 1868 Honolulu, before Nix's mother died in childbirth. Nix's life - her entire existence - is at stake.

Engrossing adventure
Revisado: 09-19-18
I'm not the target audience for this book. I downloaded it because the author was a friend of a friend and listened to it during a semi-cross country trip. With most audible books, I take a break and check out other work. This story was too intriguing for me to stop. The character relationships are believable, the locales exciting, and the plot unique and enjoyable. I strongly recommend this book to lovers of travel, adventure, romance, and an exploration of addiction and strained family ties. In short- pick it up!
