Historia
How can poor and weak societies escape poverty traps? Political economists have traditionally offered three answers: "stimulate growth first," "build good institutions first," or "some fortunate nations inherited good institutions that led to growth." Yuen Yuen Ang rejects all three schools of thought and their underlying assumptions: linear causation, a mechanistic worldview, and historical determinism. Instead, she launches a new paradigm grounded in complex adaptive systems, which embraces the reality of interdependence and humanity's capacity to innovate.

Some of the facts and research presented would be otherwise counterintuitive for people who posses a snapshot understanding of modern China. I think everyone interested in politics and development should read it. Especially policy makers.

India has lessons for many countries .. a fascinating read
Revisado: 02-17-23
Reading this made me understand the predicament of my own country Kenya and my adopted country South Africa. There are important lessons to be learnt. The interplay between big business, crony capitalism, politics ethnicity and regional balances are significant. India is still a fascinating country and much has to be done for the country to realize it’s true potential.

Historia
Power in the modern world—military, economic, geopolitical—is built on a foundation of computer chips. America has maintained its lead as a superpower because it has dominated advances in computer chips and all the technology that chips have enabled. In Chip War economic historian Chris Miller recounts the fascinating sequence of events that led to the United States perfecting chip design, and how faster chips helped defeat the Soviet Union (by rendering the Russians’ arsenal of precision-guided weapons obsolete).

A book that everyone must read. A great way to understand the history of Silicon Valley and the role it has played in the world. The role of geo politics and how different leaders made history forming decisions. China and the US. And very much about the role of Taiwan as a center of the global semiconductor world. Excellent book!

One of my best books ever.
Revisado: 10-15-21
Great story. As someone who moved to South Africa with my family on my late 40s to start a new life, the story has always intrigued me. Mandela's leadership provided the best possible transition one could hope for. The work is still not done and some in the ANC have destroyed ot of the goodwill, but this story reminds us all of the vision.
A great mind.

Historia
Beyond race or class, our lives are defined by a powerful, unspoken system of divisions. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson gives an astounding portrait of this hidden phenomenon. Linking America, India and Nazi Germany, Wilkerson reveals how our world has been shaped by caste - and how its rigid, arbitrary hierarchies still divide us today. With clear-sighted rigour, Wilkerson unearths the eight pillars that connect caste systems across civilisations and demonstrates how our own era of intensifying conflict and upheaval has arisen as a consequence of caste.

Lesson in Global Foreign Policy thinking
Revisado: 08-20-20
I enjoyed this. Had the opportunity a few years ago to spend a week in Singapore at the Lee Kuan Yew school of public policy. And witness for myself some of the great results of the transformation.
There are some provocative views and some hard core believers in democracy might challenge some of his principles. None can challenge the results.

Historia
What are the grand dynamics that drive the accumulation and distribution of capital? Questions about the long-term evolution of inequality, the concentration of wealth, and the prospects for economic growth lie at the heart of political economy. But satisfactory answers have been hard to find for lack of adequate data and clear guiding theories.

Rigorous. Very indepth. Very important
Revisado: 07-02-20
Enjoyed the book. Sometimes very rigourous. The fundamental argument on equalization through a global tax on wealth is probably the best option in reducing inequality, and in turn also better supporting the social state is a powerful one.

Historia
If you follow the headlines, the world in the 21st century appears to be sinking into chaos, hatred and irrationality. Yet, as Steven Pinker shows, if you follow the trendlines, you discover that our lives have become longer, healthier, safer and more prosperous - not just in the West but worldwide. Such progress is no accident: it's the gift of a coherent value system that many of us embrace without even realising it. These are the values of the Enlightenment: of reason, science, humanism and progress.
