I'm not really someone who enjoys fiction, but following a recommendation, I gave it a try based on the promise of 80's nostalgia and entertainment. I'm sure glad I did!

I enjoyed this audio version and I will purchase the actual book because it's a great resource to return to. As a NP and autism mom, I found the information very useful. I was happy to learn I was already doing many of the suggested interventions, but i realized there were important components of treatment that I was missing. This book is not about "curing" autism, but rather introducing simple strategies that can improve quality of life by reducing discomfort and minimizing behaviors.

Coming from a time of recent diagnosis and much uncertainty, this book provided valuable insights in considering the perspective of my autistic child, and helped to transform the natural grief and mourning I was experiencing into a place of acceptance and optimism. I really enjoyed learning more about the sensory factors that can impact children on the spectrum. As a primary health care provider, I found that this book is equally beneficial to both parents and professionals. I requested that my husband read it, who stated that he also enjoyed it. We agreed that it provided a much needed sense of hope during a time when we had so many unanswered questions.

This is my first book I have read by Temple Grandin, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I found the book fascinating and really enjoyed learning about her young life, particularly the way in which her mother began initiating therapy which was way ahead of her time. I really marveled at that! Being a primary care provider, I appreciated the scientific nature of the book as well as the history of the diagnosis itself. This book provides one of the best explanations of the "autism epidemic", in that there isn't so much a mass increase in cases, but increase in correct diagnosis, which has evolved with the criteria from the DSM editions...which he describes beautifully. With the increase of autism diagnoses, there has been a natural decline of mental retardation and schizophrenia diagnoses, as autistic symptoms of these disorders have been defined within their own into a separate autism category, which has continued to evolve with release of DSM V. In discussing autism with my patients, I will likely reference this book in conversation. As a parent of a young son recently diagnosed on the spectrum, I was fascinated to learn more about the autistic brain and the life of this extraordinary woman.

As a health care provider and mother to a young son recently diagnosed with ASD, I enjoyed learning more about the son-rise principles and techniques. I found it to be very beneficial, not only in conveying important messages to parents regarding attitude and optimism, but a lot of the core principles and strategies make a lot of sense. In my realm of healthcare, ABA is the primary therapy recommendation. I had some colleagues of mine urge me to NOT look into this treatment modality. I felt it was in my family's best interests to explore all of the available information to better my understanding of what was out there. I was so glad that I did! I have already had good success implementing some strategies (excitement, energy, and enthusiasm) with some positive results.
