A Truly Remarkable Story

This is a true life adventure story of a stubborn and persistent Maine woman riding her horses across America in the 1950s. Combine this with a mini history of America in the first half of the 20th century and you have a perfect story. The relationship Annie has with her animals is remarkable. What she accomplishes after receiving a "death sentence" is remarkable. The help and friendships developed along the way are remarkable. If you love horses, this story is for you. If you're not a horse person this story is for you.

I'm not sure if it was a poor translation or just poorly written. I found the plot difficult to follow. Transitions between events were confusing. I found the character description unclear. The Italian names also added to the muddle. The narrator was not the most effective, either. He sounded too old and stuffy.

For anyone who has yet to experience Tolkein, he weaves the very best adventure story in history. Even those who admit to not liking fantasy will be enchanted by Middle Earth. From The Hobbit, and all through the Lord of the Rings trilogy, you are completely roped into the world of hobbits, elves, wizards, and dwarves. It's the quintessential good and evil saga which will have you yearning to read it again and again. I am delighted to finally hear it narrated with perfection on Audible.

If you are a fan of romantic novels involving family secrets and struggles, you may enjoy this story. Most of the action takes place in a Vineyard in Tuscany. I'm more of a thriller/suspense fan, so it was not my cup of tea.

Disappointing Ending

Towles weaves an engaging adventure story. I was captivated from page 1. He also masterfully creates memorable characters. In that regard, the behavior of two of the main characters at the end is inconsistent with their carefully developed personalities . The narration is well done.
