Historia
Ida B. Wells is an American icon of truth telling. Born to slaves, she was a pioneer of investigative journalism, a crusader against lynching, and a tireless advocate for suffrage, both for women and for African Americans. She cofounded the NAACP, started the Alpha Suffrage Club in Chicago, and was a leader in the early civil rights movement. This engaging memoir relates Wells’ private life as a mother as well as her public activities as a teacher, lecturer, and journalist in her fight for equality and justice.

Outstanding!
Revisado: 02-07-23
I thought I knew about Ida B. Wells through school growing up in the 1970s and 80s, but this book written the lady herself, gave me chills which then turned to enormous pride. The fact that women like Mrs. Wells-Barnett walked among us in boldness makes me so proud and grateful. This book was beautifully narrated.

Historia
Sparking a flurry of heated debate, Hannah Arendt's authoritative and stunning report on the trial of German Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann first appeared in The New Yorker in 1963. This revised edition includes material that came to light after the trial, as well as Arendt's postscript. A major journalistic triumph by an intellectual of singular influence, Eichmann in Jerusalem is as shocking as it is informative - an unflinching look at one of the most unsettling (and unsettled) issues of the 20th century.

Excellent read
Revisado: 02-21-21
I intended to read this book decades ago, but never go around to it. I thoroughly enjoy speaking with and reading people who are fiercely independent-minded. As I understand it, Arendt received quite a bit of pushback from those who thought she should have written about Eichmann and the trial in a more aggressive manner - as opposed to the balanced that she gave to both. Eichmann was no sympathetic figure in any sense, but the Moral courage Arendt showed in playing it straight down the middle was refreshing. I wish we had more writers like her as opposed to the current crop of ideological group-thinkers pretending to be neutral or objective from their echo chambers.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 02-20-21
I expected to hear a story of triumph over tragedy and, at least half hearted condemnation or critical reflection on the folly of a system of cruelty and oppression. What I got was a lukewarm, tacit, and opaque glance at the so called cultural revolution. It felt like a literary Stockholm Syndrome. I feel the author rationalized the irrational. However, it is interesting that people from across the globe want to come to the US, while many who are born & raised here are brainwashed to feel antipathy towards it.

Here is an unapologetic look into the factors that have caused so many Blacks to think and act in the negative way they do towards themselves and others. This timely body of work is from a man well versed in the American educational system, as well as educational systems throughout the world.

More relevant today than ever.
Revisado: 02-18-21
Excellent book. Mr. Woodson’s words are more relevant and prophetic today than they were when it was written. Interestingly, the same dynamics that worked against Black Americans in the 1930s are still in place and just as strong as ever. My complements also to the Narrator for taking on such a monumental task with enthusiasm and passion.

Historia
Spinoza's brilliant metaphysical system was derived neither from reality nor experience. Starting from basic assumptions, with a series of geometric proofs he built a universe which was also God, one and the same thing, the classic example of pantheism. Although his system seems an oddity today, Spinoza's conclusions are deeply in accord with modern thought, from science (the holistic ethics of today's ecologists) to politics (the idea that the state exists to protect the individual).

Strathern’s concise summaries of historical figures are always enjoyable; and couldn’t ask for a better narrator than Whitfield. A great pairing for presenting these figures.

Historia
With Hegel, philosophy became very difficult indeed. His dialectical method produced the most grandiose metaphysical system known to man. Even Hegel conceded that "only one man understands me, and even he does not." Hegel's system included absolutely everything, but its most vital element was the dialectic of the thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. This method sprang from Hegel's ambition to overcome the deficiencies of logic and ascended toward mind as the ultimate reality.

Revisado: 12-31-20
Mr. Strathern’s 90 Minutes series is an absolute gem for anyone remotely interested in Philosophy. A novel’s worth of knowledge condensed into these 90-minute masterpieces. The narrator, Mr. Whitfield, is a joy to listen to while driving or in transit.
