Historia
In 1632, the Emperor of Hindustan, Shah Jahan, overwhelmed with grief over the death of his beloved wife, Mumatz Mahal, commissioned the building of a grand mausoleum to symbolize the greatness of their love. The story surrounding the construction of the Taj Mahal occurs, however, against a scrim of fratricidal war, murderous rebellion, unimaginable wealth, and, not least of all, religious fundamentalism ruthlessly opposing tolerance and coexistence between the disparate peoples in the empire.

One doesn’t expect conciseness from Robert Cato, so when he delivered the goods in such a concise and vivid way, it won me over completely.

Historia
Prince Lyov Nikolayevitch Myshkin is one of the great characters in Russian literature. Is he a saint or just naïve? Is he an idealist or, as many in General Epanchin's society feel, an "idiot"? Certainly his return to St. Petersburg after years in a Swiss clinic has a dramatic effect on the beautiful Aglaia, youngest of the Epanchin daughters, and on the charismatic but willful Nastasya Filippovna. As he paints a vivid picture of Russian society, Dostoyevsky shows how principles conflict with emotions - with tragic results.

Historia
Twenty years ago, it was as if someone turned on a light. The future blazed into existence with each deliberate word that William Gibson laid down. The winner of Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards, Neuromancer didn't just explode onto the science fiction scene - it permeated into the collective consciousness, culture, science, and technology.Today, there is only one science fiction masterpiece to thank for the term "cyberpunk," for easing the way into the information age and Internet society.

No question a historically important book, but…
Revisado: 07-08-24
This book has for many years been on my list of historically important science fiction books that I needed to read. But I have two problems with it. The cyber punk style that it helped pioneer now seems too familiar and dated, and I had trouble concentrating on the story line, which may be largely my fault. But his vision of AI’s also seems dated and arbitrary to me. In short, other than historical interest, there wasn’t enough here to give me pleasure as a reader.

Historia
In 1851, Father Jean Marie Latour comes to serve as the Apostolic Vicar to New Mexico. What he finds is a vast territory of red hills and tortuous arroyos, American by law but Mexican and Indian in custom and belief. In the almost forty years that follow, Latour spreads his faith in the only way he knows—gently, all the while contending with an unforgiving landscape, derelict and sometimes openly rebellious priests, and his own loneliness. Out of these events, Cather gives us an indelible vision of life unfolding in a place where time itself seems suspended.

Did not meet expectations
Revisado: 06-28-24
Willa Cather has a great reputation, and I loved one of her short stories. As a sort of history of early New Mexico, this has a lot of merit. But as a well shaped novel, it does not make the grade, although the vivid descriptions do suggest the hand of a master.

This book throws light on many features of the American character. Its concern is not merely to portray the scorners of intellect in American life, but to say something about what the intellectual is, and can be, as a force in a democratic society.

Revisado: 05-16-24
This book has held up remarkably well. That it, it is of both historical and contemporary relevance. This I attribute to the author’s wisdom: his ability to see in the vivid particulars of history the universal tendencies of not only the human heart but American society and society more broadly.

Historia
This work is a landmark in American political thought. Preeminent Richard Hofstadter examines the passion for progress and reform that colored the entire period from 1890 to 1940 with startling and stimulating results. The Age of Reform searches out the moral and emotional motives of the reformers, the myths and dreams in which they believed, and the realities with which they had to compromise.

Historia
The Progressive Era witnessed the nation's most convulsive upheaval, a time of radicalism far beyond the Revolution or anything since. In response to the birth of modern America, one small group of middle-class Americans seized control of the nation and attempted to remake society from bottom to top. They accomplished an astonishing range of triumphs, yet the progressive movement collapsed as the war came to an end amid race riots, strikes, high inflation, and a frenzied Red scare.

If the book was named the Progressive Era, I would have given it higher marks
Revisado: 04-11-24
I enjoyed reading this as a general history of the Progressive Era, Buttressed as a compelling history of the Progressive movement, it fell short. For example, it was very weak on the political aspect of the Progressive movement and also weak on distinguishing how Progressive prejudices differed from routine prejudices throughout world and American history.

Historia
Wired called Dr. Fei-Fei Li “one of a tiny group of scientists—a group perhaps small enough to fit around a kitchen table—who are responsible for AI’s recent remarkable advances.” Known to the world as the creator of ImageNet, a key catalyst of modern artificial intelligence, Dr. Li has spent more than two decades at the forefront of the field. But her career in science was improbable from the start. The Worlds I See is the moving memoir of a scientist coming of age as an immigrant in America who finds her calling at the forefront of the AI revolution.

Historia
America was once the world’s dream factory. We turned imagination into reality, from curing polio to landing on the Moon to creating the internet. And we were confident that more wonders lay just over the horizon: clean and infinite energy, a cure for cancer, computers and robots as humanity’s great helpers, and space colonies. (Also, of course, flying cars.) Science fiction, from The Jetsons to Star Trek, would become fact.

Revisado: 01-21-24
I agree with the author's basic and well-argued take that we should take more risks as a society and be more oriented to growth. But, in my opinion, he takes that argument too far.
