Ready Player Two, like RP1, tries to bring forth some genuinely fun and interesting ideas but fails in execution. The main character Wade started off, in RP1, as a self-centered and arrogant jerk but never really elevated beyond that and, at least initially, gets even worse in RP2. This coupled with Cline's almost reflexive tic of constantly reiterating the same information many times, sometimes in the same chapter where that info is introduced, makes the story a bit of a slog to get through. The ending presents some really interesting questions and concepts to explore but it's hitched to a pretty run of the mill thriller formula that is poorly delivered and essentially a retread of RP1. Those concepts and questions would have been much better served and explored as the main content of the book instead of being basically tacked on to the end.

If you've seen Suggs' one man show "My Life Story" then you'll already have a lot of the information he imparts here, with a few exceptions. However, it's still well worth the price of admission because, whether you're a fan of Madness or not or even if you have no idea who they are, Suggs has a fun and humorous style to his narration and his experiences are related in an equally enjoyable manner. You don't have to like him, or know him, to gain a smile from this book.

Ready Player One, in my opinion, is wholly undeserving of the lavish praise filled out upon it, but neither is it a complete literary atrocity either.
The protagonist, Wade Watts, oscillates between being a mildly annoying dimwit to a character getting on to an author's dare to absolutely hate the character and the narrative in general. And it seems that, if you drew back the needless "classics" references and the corresponding text explaining why they are classics, you would end with a story in the range of a novella.
Speaking of abridgement, Wil Wheaton's narration of this book is okay. He worked rather well but they could have cut out practically all of the scoreboard readings and the listener wouldn't miss much. As it stands the scoreboard readings drag the narration to a dead stop. This is not Mr. Wheaton's fault, it's simply something that could be captured at a glance by someone reading the physical book to themselves, but spoken out loud it just doesn't flow well.
In all fairness, I grew up with MST3K and Rifftrax, so slogging through arguably bad media doesn't annoy or anger me too often. So at least I can honestly say thatI got a laugh out of it.

Dietz does it best

What about Norman Dietz’s performance did you like?

Norman Dietz does really well with giving each character their own voice, even though Pat is the most common one. There are times where the character of Pat rolls into these exasperated monologues, the end results showing his oblivious nature as the punchline, and Mr. Dietz's narration of these moments makes him sound a little like Deforest Kelley in his Doctor McCoy character.
Dietz also does quite well with the character of Rancid Crabtree, whose dialect and accent is spelled out int the printed book in a manner that makes him somewhat difficult to read, perfectly clear while still maintaining the nature of the character.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Fun but with some harsh sound effects

This is an enjoyable little addition to the mythos, for Harry Potter fans, and the narration is good. However, there are some sound effects used that, at first, are merely obnoxious but become grating particularly in the history of the professional quidditch teams. I toughed it out until about halfway through and then seriously considered giving up on it. But I made it through and things settled down a bit after that. I would still recommend this to any potter fan but with the proviso that they avoid using headphones.

I have only gone through three of the Bo Tully books but this one was by far the funniest. One particular joke with Pap had me laughing so hard I almost had to pull over. You'll know it when you hear it.

Would you consider the audio edition of Avalanche to be better than the print version?

Haven't read the print version

What three words best describe Danny Campbell’s voice?

Old and crusty

Any additional comments?

Overall, the book is another fun little mystery that doesn't feel the need to delve into the gory details and depravity that many murder mysteries do.
However, Danny Campbell's narration leaves a little to be desired. His voice is enjoyably gruff and gravelly but, much like Tim Curry's reading of A Christmas Carol, it serves certain characters extremely well while becoming a liability to others. Pap and even Sheriff Tully are well served by this vocal performance but any female character has trouble coming across as very feminine. Patrick F. McManus also writes certain pieces of dialogue without identifying who is speaking at different points in the conversation. In print this usually isn't much of an issue because you can keep track of this as you read. It also doesn't cause a problem in audiobooks if the narrator can sufficiently separate each character's voice. Alas, Mr. Campbell doesn't do that too well here and so there are a few conversations that tend to get a little confusing.
Still, I would fully recommend anyone who likes a comedic mystery pick this up even at full price, I think it's worth it.

A fun little mystery but the audio mix is bad

Patrick F. McManus has long been known his short stories and, if you've read them, you will notice a lot of things from those stories popping up here. Things like the Scragg family, characterized a little differently, and how Bo Tully's first gift to a girlfriend was a bar of Life Boy soap, much like Pat's short related.
The narrator does a fine job of giving the various characters distinct, and sufficiently rustic, voices but the audio mix on this book has a tendency to play out narration very soft and then blare out dialog at almost ear splitting levels.

Tim Curry makes a good Scrooge

Tim Curry's voice serves Scrooge, and some of the more criminal characters well, but it has a tendency to twist the better natured characters up at times. A perfect example is when Mrs. Cratchit gets upset with Bob blessing Scrooge the vocal work mskes her sound a bit like a snarling evil beast.
Other than that, I really enjoyed this audiobook, enough to recommend it to anyone.
