The Story was Fantastic and SO WAS THE NARRATOR!
Revisado: 01-21-25
I’m always at a loss at the stinging reviews this narrator gets! I love the pitch and timbre of her voice, the “poshness” of her normal accent and the versatility and accuracy of her others. I love that I can understand every word she says, that I don’t have to crank up the volume to hear her and that she makes by far fewer mispronunciations than most other narrators I am familiar with. I like the rhythm she acquires as she gets into the story and I get caught up in it as well. Perhaps the problem is the lack of patience the complainants may have. I noticed one accused her of being AI generated. I loved this book. My mother was an Anglophile and an extreme British history buff. She passed that love to me. She took me to England when I was just a teenager and one of the places she showed me was Hardwick Hall as she was quite knowledgeable about Bess of Hardwick. How I wish I could have shared this book with her!

Historia
This wickedly candid memoir that Ava Gardner dared not publish during her lifetime offers a revealing self-portrait of the film legend's life and loves in Hollywood's golden age. Ava Gardner was one of Hollywood's great stars during the 1940s and '50s, an Oscar-nominated leading lady who co-starred with Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster, and Humphrey Bogart, among others. But this riveting account of her storied life and career had to wait for publication until after her death, so concerned was Gardner with its frankness.

The Story in Her Own Words

I don’t think you can get any closer to the truth about Ava Gardner than this, and the narrator does such a marvelous job it seems like you’re right there with her in the room as she talks.

Historia
When Lord Byron published Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, he woke up one moring to find himself famous. Not long after that, when the word of his separation from Lady Byron got out, he woke up one morning to find himself infamous. Ever since then, his name has been linked inextricably with great lyric poetry and great sexual scandal. Women found him irresistible; he found them irresistible, and the resulting fireworks flared through the skies of the English upper classes of the Regency with tremendous color and enormous noise.

What an amazing, interesting, intelligent book this is! I wish every biography was so well researched! While it is as fact filled as a textbook, it is as good as a novel. It corrected a number of things I had read and believed. I loved it.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Could it possibly have been better?
Revisado: 01-22-24
I’d bet money it couldn’t! Not only was the writing superb, but the story, the characters, Kingsolver’s extraordinary ability to make me care about a redneck, drug addicted, teenage football player have been practically unheard of in contemporary fiction for me. I love, love, love the links to David Copperfield and like all Dickens’ books I will read this over and over. As for the narrator, he couldn’t have been better either. Absolutely flawless performance! Flawless!

The narrator is spot on!
Revisado: 04-15-23
I don’t know what the complaints are all about unless people don’t know what New York accents sound like. Mary Jane Wells is great! It sounds to me as if she is telling the story instead of reading it. If she has always been your favorite and suddenly you don’t like how she presented this one, maybe you’re a little rigid in your expectations and are not allowing room for a true artist to practice her profession. In any case, Kleypas and Wells are an unbeatable pair. This book was well worth my credit!

In 1761, a tiny, odd-looking girl named Marie is born in a village in Switzerland. After the death of her parents, she is apprenticed to an eccentric wax sculptor and whisked off to the seamy streets of Paris, where they meet a domineering widow and her quiet, pale son. Milne has captured my heart!
Revisado: 09-26-22
Everyone who listens to their books know how important the narrator is. This was my first book by Kidd and the first audio by Milne and I am SO tempted to turn around and listen to the same book again-something I’ve only done 2 or 3 times in my life and I have been a voracious and promiscuous reader for 70 years. I will read this book again, but first I will read another by Kidd and another read by Milne to make sure it wasn’t a fluke. I loved it, Loved it! LOVED IT!!!
