Historia
Should leaders be feared or loved? Can dictators give rise to democracy? Should rulers have morals or wear them like a mask? Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince puts forth unsettling questions like these, whose answers redefined centuries of political wisdom. But what does it really mean to be Machiavellian? These 24 lectures are more than just a close reading of one of the great books of Western history.

I learned more about what the Prince was really about from this learned professor. The person and period history clearly helped shape this writing along with the genius and patriotism of its author. Highly recommend this course.

It can be argued that one simple idea-the concept of freedom-has been the driving force of Western civilization and may be the most influential intellectual force the world has ever known. But what is freedom, exactly? These 36 engaging lectures tell the dramatic story of freedom from ancient Greece to our own day, exploring a concept so close to us we may never have considered it with the thoroughness it deserves.

Killer Triggers

Historia
The most common triggers for homicide are fear, rage, revenge, money, lust, and, more rarely, sheer madness. This isn’t an exact science, of course. Any given murder can have multiple triggers. Sex and revenge seem to be common partners in crime. This book offers my memories of homicide cases that I investigated or oversaw. In each case, I examine the trigger that led to death. I chose this theme for the book because even though the why of a murder case may not be critical in an investigation, it can sometimes lead us to the killer.

Historia
On his second combat tour, Nick Brokhausen served in Recon Team Habu, CCN. This unit was part of MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies and Observations Group), or Studies and Observations Group as it was innocuously called. The small recon companies that were the center of its activities conducted some of the most dangerous missions of the war, infiltrating areas controlled by the North Vietnamese in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. The companies never exceeded more than 30 Americans, yet they were the best source for the enemy's disposition.

read his first book and loved it. liked this one more. Was still sad at end for different reasons. Coming back to us after being with such "real" people, i.e. indigenous mountain would be rough. There are some real belly laughers in here too. Read/listen to this book.

Sad in way
Revisado: 08-09-19
That so many put so much effort and performed so we'll, for a bunch a Yahoo's to piss it away. Almost no one at home grasped this at the time. I do understand why Nick ended this on this sad note and weep over it all. I do for all that suffered. Had I been there, I think I would have tucked it away as he did to regurgitate. Recommend!

Historia
12 Strong is the dramatic account of a small band of Special Forces soldiers who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. Outnumbered 40 to one, they pursued the enemy army across the mountainous Afghanistan terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif. The bone-weary American soldiers were welcomed as liberators as they rode into the city. Then the action took a wholly unexpected turn.

why didn't we keep fighting the war this way. It would have worked much better!!! This is very insightful. It reminds me of the effectiveness of the behind the lines guerilla British trained groups. They were very effective, got locals on board and had essentially no collateral damage. Glad I listened and highly recommend.

Historia
When we seek an example of great leaders with unalloyed courage, the person who comes to mind is Winston Churchill: the iconic, visionary war leader immune from the consensus of the day, who stood firmly for his beliefs when everyone doubted him. But how did young Winston become Churchill? What gave him the strength to take on the superior force of Nazi Germany when bombs rained on London and so many others had caved? In this landmark biography of Winston Churchill based on extensive new material, the true genius of the man, statesman, and leader can finally be fully understood.

Revisado: 12-31-18
We will probably never have another. I read and studied Churchill since about the time of his death. This is by far the best account, showing his frailties, mistakes, and strength. His mastery of English oratory. I've read/studied many of his books and understand them better from this biography. I recommend it highly to all democratic Patriots.

Historia
With The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors and Ship of Ghosts, James D. Hornfischer created essential and enduring narratives about America’s World War II Navy, works of unique immediacy distinguished by rich portraits of ordinary men in extremis and exclusive new information. Now he does the same for the deadliest, most pivotal naval campaign of the Pacific war: Guadalcanal. Neptune’s Inferno is at once the most epic and the most intimate account ever written of the contest for control of the seaways of the Solomon Islands.

Historia
With its thunderous assault on the Mariana Islands in June 1944, the United States crossed the threshold of total war. In this tour de force of dramatic storytelling, distilled from extensive research in newly discovered primary sources, James D. Hornfischer brings to life the campaign that was the fulcrum of the drive to compel Tokyo to surrender—and that forever changed the art of modern war.

I was most educated by this book. The details of specific people, Tippets, Spruenz, etc. we're most illuminating. The degree of suicidal ideation of those in Japanese command and their stubbornness to the end was revealed
I recommend this highly, especially to anyone who ever questioned the real need for nuclear weapons at that time. Also, it they hadn't been used at that time, we would not have known not to use them again. Think those were 20kton, not tho 20 megaton that we have today!

Historia
For seven decades, our understanding of World War II has been shaped by a standard narrative built on conventional wisdom, propaganda, the dramatic but narrow experiences of soldiers on the ground, and an early generation of historians. For his new history, James Holland has spent over 12 years unearthing new research, recording original testimony, and visiting battlefields and archives that have never before been so accessible.

Though I knew much of this, learned much. The pronunciation of words took away from the flow of the narrative. I can say this as a German speaker with some French learning. Nontheles, about to download part 2.
