Historia
In The Flame Alphabet, language is toxic to everyone but children. For adults this means no speaking, no reading, no writing, no listening—at least not without severe allergic reaction, depression or crippling pain.

I tried to like this
Revisado: 02-27-23
I tried to like this but became frustrated by the lack of character development. Very painful to listen to someone beating themselves over the head for so long.

Great info, not a great reader
Revisado: 07-23-15
What did you love best about Sleeping with Your Smart Phone?
The simplicity of the approach to changing a culture. It looks totally do-able.
What did you like best about this story?
I can act on it.
What didn’t you like about Eric Synnestvedt’s performance?
Eric has a way of speaking that sounds condescending. It gets annoying. I keep listening because it's the best way for me to get acquainted with the material, but a more positive tone to his reading would help a ton!

What would have made Design Like Apple better?
Read by someone else it might have been palatable. As read by the author it doesn't play well. He couldn't seem to keep his tone from being superior and condescending, especially regarding those who failed to heed his advice. It made the content painful to take in.
Has Design Like Apple turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. Too many good books out there to let this one determine everything.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of John Edson and Erik Synnestvedt ?
Don't know narrator voices well enough to give an opinion.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Design Like Apple?
I would not have cut. I would have added design concepts that focus on designing the customer interaction.

Historia
Reward and recognition programs can be costly and inefficient, and they primarily reward employees who are already highly engaged and productive performers. Worse still, these programs actually decrease employee motivation because they can make individual recognition, rather than the overall success of the team, the goal. Yet many businesses turn to these measures first-unaware of a better alternative. So, when it comes to changing your organizational culture, carrots and sticks don't work!

Good ideas, awful narrator
Revisado: 08-13-13
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The narrator
What other book might you compare Carrots and Sticks Don't Work to and why?
Dan Pink's Drive because it offers a simpler approach to the same issue of engagement. The two are good together. Not opposing viewpoints but different ways of getting to the same end.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Slightly cynical or condescending inflection, way too rapid reading, mispronunciation of words all of which highly detracted from the kind, thoughtful content.
Do you think Carrots and Sticks Don't Work needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. I think he gets his point across.
Any additional comments?
Don't let Richard Broski read any other books until he learns how to pronounce words like concomitant, Appomattox, and subsequent correctly, SLOW DOWN and drop that tone. I wanted the info but I found myself getting angry at the delivery. It was a struggle not to go buy the book so that I didn't have to listen to this reading.

Useful but tedious
Revisado: 03-04-13
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Information is valuable, but sometimes seems off on the science. Author's voice gets a bit annoying and uninteresting at times despite his obvious enjoyment of the material.
What didn’t you like about John J. Medina’s performance?
His voice grates at times.
