Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

The juxtaposition of Jewish life in relation to Black lives in the plot. The stunning characters! The message in the epilog.

the trace and the use of money as both a savior and a downfall

that Frank would come for Ada and would end up dead...too predictable for me. needs a stable twist ..but still a fun read.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Cruising..
Revisado: 05-08-22
I really cruised through this book, enjoying the characters as they marched into a battle of wits. However, the very last scene was disappointing. Finding no other way to end the narrative, the author short changed his audience. However, it was still a joy ride and I recommend it highly.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Strange story.
Revisado: 02-07-21
I found the narration style and cadence a bit clipped and confusing. The story, while part interesting (especially the bunting lore) had characters that felt contrived. Knowing that part of Southern Illinois very well, I couldn't help but be drawn to the imagery of the area. However I don't believe I can recommend this storyline.

A Stroll through Mossy Headstones
Revisado: 10-28-20
The voices of ghosts speak volumes about a time when families were split across the many states and territories. There is a palpable yearning. ....a terrible thirst for learning the whereabouts of a brother, friend, sister, or parent. The author has whet my taste for more...and then again more.

Slide into grace!
Revisado: 10-20-20
One of the best modern Christmas books I've ever read . It all started with a snowy sled ride that created a life long living friendship in a time of great racial divide. It's a poignant travel log through the 60s and on to 2003. This book is a Christmas classic in the making.
