Historia
Dixon Penn’s family wasn’t terribly shocked when he announced he was gay, but they were devastated to learn he’s the only one without the gift of spellcraft. Fortunately, that doesn’t stop spellcraft from reaching out to him. Dixon’s prospects have gone from bad to worse, but a contest at the biggest greeting card company in the tri-state area would be just the thing to turn his luck around. Yuri Volnikov is determined to keep the charming contestant out. But Dixon has always been a sucker for big guys with exotic accents, and he won’t take no for an answer.

I really enjoyed this series!
Revisado: 12-27-22
Very funny series and narrator is perfect with the voices!
This is comedy at its best. There is magic and an alternative universe, but it is not taken very seriously. It is an enjoyable, funny series, about the main characters doing their best to help people in need, sometimes with the help of magic.
I really like that they packaged three books in one audiobook. Each book by itself is not very long, but together that make for a really good buy. Looking forward to the next volume in the series.

The scene where the mime Crouch is introduced made me laugh so hard my eyes were watering. I also really appreciate that they packaged three books in one audiobook. Each book by itself is not very long, but together they make for a really good buy. Looking forward to volume 3.

Historia
Despite the dismal Broadway season, Gunplay continues to draw crowds. A gangland spectacle, it's packed to the gills with action, explosions, and gunfire. In fact, Gunplay is so loud that no one notices the killing of Monte Field. In a sold-out theater, Field is found dead partway through the second act, surrounded by empty seats. The police hold the crowd and call for the one man who can untangle this daring murder: Inspector Richard Queen.

Racist story
Revisado: 03-14-22
This is one of those books that have not aged well at all. I understand that society was more openly racist at the time of the writing but I’m not willing to “enjoy” a book that refers to the house boy as a monkey or talks about his “relatives in the zoo”. There are other characters who also are talked of pejoratively because of their race, the Irish usher and the murderer are examples of these.
The narrator was also a disappointment as he read the story very slowly (I had to speed up the narration) and in a tone that made me view both Queen characters as obnoxious and condescending.

Was this written by a 12 year old?
Revisado: 11-18-21
If you miss your kindergarten teacher or the story corner lady from the library, this is the book for you!
If you are looking for a romance between adults, continue searching.
Let me explain: the narrator reads the story just like a kindergarten teacher with the funny voices and a slightly condescending tone. Would the audio book be better with a different narration? Not really! The author seem to be a very young person who lacks real life experience. Even in small details, the book doesn’t seem to be based in real life.
SOME SPOILERS AHEAD!
Ok, here are some examples of what I’m talking about:
There is a sentence in which she describes one of the MCs, who works at a bookstore, having to deal with old ladies (plural) who did not understand that they couldn’t check out (borrow) books from the bookstore. Have you ever met an old person? Because even when my relatives became senile they still knew what a bookstore was. If anyone is this confused that they don’t know the difference, they shouldn’t be going around on their own.
MC’s uncle is in the hospital. A man appears in the room and said uncle sends MC to go buy mints (candy). Of course, the man was a doctor who was coming to tell the uncle that he is dying. Apparently, the author has never had the experience of having a loved one in the hospital, because MC doesn’t seem to recognize a doctor when she sees one.
The other MC works at a insurance company. He likes to write little novels where a description of damages is required. He has already been chastised about it, but he can’t help himself with writing dramatic (as in “It was a dark and stormy night…”) fiction instead of a succinct report. Has the author ever been to an office? There are lots of people dissatisfied with their job, but nobody goes on doing something they know is going to jeopardize their living.
This same MC finds a photo in one of the damaged cars and instead of adding it to the files to be returned to the owner, he decides to keep the photo, which he takes it out from time to time to look at it and puts it on his desk when writing about her accident, even though he has never met the woman in the photo. Ok, that is not cute! That is not romantic. That is bridging into creepy territory.

Historia
Gideon Frayne has spent his whole working life as a policeman in the village of Dark on Bodmin Moor. His first missing-child case is eating him alive. When his own boss sends in a psychic to help with the case, he's gutted - he's a level-headed copper who doesn't believe in such things, and he can't help but think that the arrival of clairvoyant Lee Tyack is a comment on his failure to find the little girl. But Lee is hard to hate, no matter how Gideon tries. At first Lee's insights into the case make no sense, but he seems to have a window straight into Gideon's heart.

Enjoyable story
Revisado: 07-01-21
This was an enjoyable story but it would be best for prospective listeners to familiarize themselves with Cornwall - it's geography, culture and folklore. In this first book, for example, the Bodmin Beast plays a role, and in subsequent books more of the Cornish culture will play significant role in the story. This is why I came back to restart the series after having to stop listening to learn more about the folklore of the region.
I would also like to make sure that if prospective listeners have a problem with foul language, M/M sex scenes or supernatural and pagan imagery, this is not the book for them.
I found the narration not the best but in this first book, not the worst. For some reason, later in the series he changes the voice of Gideon making him sound like a pirate. But in this audiobook it is fine.

Historia
Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette. Where to go from there? From bad to worse, apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire - and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.

Is this for young adults?
Revisado: 11-02-20
Be advised that this review might have some revealing information that might spoil the "surprise" of reading/listening to the book.
I was very surprised that this audiobook received such good ratings. Although the narrator did a very good job of reading the book, the story was very simplistic and obvious from the beginning. I understand that this is a fantasy book, but it was set in Victorian times which makes me expect that the author would do some research about the period. During the opening scene, we are introduced to the heroine of the story at a dance ball where she has a parasol (yes, indoors!) and where, at some point in the story, a acquaintance "tips his hat" in recognition. They are indoors during a party!!!
The behavior of the main characters is also puzzling. Apparently, the author decided to introduce romantic scenes without too much thought to what is supposed to be happening in the story. So, even though her friend is being tortured and probably dying (and she can hear the screaming), and she is a prisoner herself with a very limited time to pass information to the hero, this seems to be a good time to start some sexy time. What??
I would say that this book would rate,in my opinion, as a very inferior version of a book by Amanda Quick (Jayne Ann Krentz/Jayne Castle), if that gives you any indication of the level of the story.

Very slow, didn't stand the passing of time
Revisado: 01-12-17
This book is one of the British historical library's choice for republishing. Unfortunately, it didn't stand the passing of time. Although the narration was very good, the book is very slow to our contemporary taste, and full of lyricism in odd places - the detective in the middle of an elaboration to the reasoning of a recent murder, stops to contemplate the beauty of the beach. There's also a lot of people trying to kill themselves for the honor of family name, to protect a loved one, etc. Meanwhile, bodies are dropping like flies without anybody coming up with reasonable clues. People, instead, are afraid that murders are being realized by mythical creatures... And finally, the author used a gimmick to stop the police work (I'm not telling what in case you still want to listen to this book) twice! The first time it's ok, but the second time you think - oh come on!

I liked the performance on this audio book because the story is performed by several actors. I like the radio/drama or theater/radio effect. Very enjoyable !

Revisado: 04-28-15
It was OK, not very good. The writing was good (i.e. the dialogue, vocabulary, etc. ), but the story was very blah. There was a moment that I thought I had skipped some part, since the "victim" just reappeared in the scene with apparently no help from Sherlock. But then we are told he had helped (really? Why weren't we there?).

Historia
In his wickedly brilliant first novel, Debut Dagger Award winner Alan Bradley introduces one of the most singular and engaging heroines in recent fiction: Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison. It is the summer of 1950 - and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia’s family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.

Childish voice narrator
Revisado: 04-13-15
The narrator has a VERY childish voice that is ok when she is voicing Flavia, the 11 year old heroine of the story. But when she is voicing all the other characters, none of which are children, then it becomes a problem for me. Personally, I don't like cutesy, so I would have preferred a narrator with normal voice that could distinguish each character instead of relying on the characterization of just the child.
The story itself was charming enough. I don't know that it intrigued/tempted me enough to make me read the next one in the series.
