Historia
England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. It’s a grand old country house - the family home of his old friend - and a perfect haven. Or so it seems. But in the blistering summer heat, trouble is afoot. Simmering tensions are tearing the family apart, and it all comes to a head in the most horrifying way.

I’m a late bloomer with Ms. Christie’s works. Glad I discovered Poirot for myself on my own terms. I think I have seen and/or heard the mall at lest once!! 30 plus easily! This is such a great performance. It made it irresistible and hard to stop listening at times.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

McBride Delivers Again!!
Revisado: 10-16-24
Totally loved the story and characters. McBride interweaves their lives together so freaking great. How the history of one impacted the lives of another was done masterfully. Their faults don’t out shine their goodness. I like that. The greatest line in the story for me was, ‘It’s the dope, not the people.’ This one will be a great one to recommend to the family and book clubs. Enjoy!!

Historia
Angelic Essie Belle Johnson and devilish Laura Reed both agree that they need to do something to spice up their lives and earn more money. So, they start their own church on the street in front of their Harlem apartment. With Laura's gift for performing and Essie's melodious voice, the two quickly become a hit and must move their services into a renovated theater. But as their congregation grows, a host of misfits enter the scene - some honest, but others who just want a piece of the pie.

I throughly enjoyed this short story from Mr. Hughes. So much richness and details that bring me back to my own days in the church and memories. This one kept me glued to the headphones at every quiet moment. Highly recommended for your own quiet times, or that 5 hour flight!! Enjoy!!

Historia
This stirring coming-of-age tale unfolds in 1930s rural Kansas. A poignant portrait of African-American family life in the early twentieth century, it follows the story of young Sandy Rogers as he grows from a boy to a man. We meet Sandy's mother, Annjee, who works as a housekeeper for a wealthy white family; his strong-willed grandmother, Hager; Jimboy, Sandy's father, who travels the country looking for work; Aunt Tempy, the social climber; and Aunt Harriet, the blues singer who has turned away from her faith.

Love the characters as I would expect and truly loved the journey we were taken on with Sandy. So much rich history woven in to absorb if you are a history geek. Blues journeys, Jazz journeys, rail road history bleed in, speakeasy’s across the South mixed in, and a nod to The Great Migration. I totally enjoyed the journeys and the reminder that we have a great and rich history way beyond the history text in schools that we need to revisit occasionally to just relish in and enjoy.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Dodo and MonkeyPants got it right.
Awesome listen! Great story and wonderful characters. I love the character development and how their histories were woven in and out of the story as events took place which warranted an explanation.
Great story that teaches us a bit more about how we all or oddly connected from family to friends to our ‘village’ and how that village is connected to other places. I liked how the Pullman Car Porters were woven in too! Another great history lesson injected!

You probably haven't noticed them. But they've noticed you. They notice everything. That's their job. Sitting quietly in a nondescript car outside a bank making note of the tellers' work habits. Lagging a few car lengths behind the Brinks truck on its daily rounds. Surreptitiously jiggling the handle of an unmarked service door at the racetrack. They're heisters.

Good story and the movie made me listen to this one! Enjoyed listening to Parker do his thing. Great performance, too! I think the embellishments in the movie were good. Don’t bother with the director’s cut! Love how gritty and unforgiving Parker is. No phucks given for sure!!

Historia
Red Tails, George Lucas’s celebration of America’s first Black flying squadron, the Tuskegee Airmen, should have been a moment of victory for Doug Melville. He expected to see his great-uncle Benjamin O. Davis Jr.—the squadron’s commander—immortalized on-screen for his selfless contributions to America. But as the film rolled, Doug was shocked when he realized that Ben Jr.’s name had been omitted and replaced by the fictional Colonel A. J. Bullard. And Ben’s father, Benjamin O. Davis Sr., America’s first Black general who helped integrate the military, was left out completely.

Absolutely Amazing American History!!! Knowing more is always a great thing!!
Revisado: 04-01-24
This was an amazing share of knowledge and history which should not go quietly into the wild blue yonder. I am so grateful the author decided to share his family’s story. I knew of both of the ‘Invisible Generals’ and learning the back story elevates them even higher on my list of inspiring contributors to our collective saga of American History. Thank you sincerely for sharing and educating us.
This is a must learn story for all of us. The playing field has never been and may never be equal or level but it is THESE stories which inspire and motivate us to keep pushing our way up to the tables and out of the stereotypes.
Cheers all!

Love the story and history. The characters are memorable and well developed. I never felt they were overdeveloped and therefore, I never bored with their back story. I appreciate great character development. I hope others enjoy the journey with Honoree, Bessie, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, and Sawyer(plus Lulu)!
